Default agpgart: X tried to set rate=x0.

After a few kernel and NVIDIA driver updates, i found out that my 3D OpenGL performance was rather low, lower than before. I took a look at my 'dmesg' output and this is what i found:

agpgart: Found an AGP 3.5 compliant device at 0000:00:00.0.
agpgart: reserved bits set in mode 0x1f00021c. Fixed.
agpgart: X tried to set rate=x0. Setting to AGP3 x4 mode.
agpgart: Putting AGP V3 device at 0000:00:00.0 into 4x mode
agpgart: Putting AGP V3 device at 0000:01:00.0 into 4x mode

X tried to set rate to zero? hmm weird. Wait a minute, agp mode is set to 4x? Why not 8x? So thats why my 3D performance dropped, i'm running at half my AGP bandwidth.

Since i haven't made any changes to my hardware and my software changes have been updates to FC4 via 'yum' and manual updates of the NVIDIA driver, i'm guessing the problem could be with one of those updates.

Hardware: Asus A7V600 motherboard, AthlonXP 2100+ cpu, NVIDIA GeForce FX 5600 video card.

Any help would be appriciated.

PS:
i opened a kernel bug report with RedHat, but they said this is a bug in NVIDIA's driver, thats why i'm here

Which kernel are you using? Please generate and attach a bug report file (see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=46678).

I'm using the latest Fedora Core 4 kernel: 2.6.13-1.1532_FC4

I'll attach a report right away.

Looking at the log file, there are two problems: 1) the NVIDIA driver potentially sets the reserved bit 2 in the requested AGP 3.x mode, which is rightfully flagged as an error, but fixed by AGPGART and 2) you specified NVreg_ReqAGPRate=8; this causes the 0x rate request because the ReqAGPRate mask is currently treated at a generic mask, where NVreg_ReqAGPRate=2 is equivalent to AGP 8x on an AGP 3.x configuration. Unless you wish to force AGP 4x operation, you needn't specify NVreg_ReqAGPRate (the module option is disabled by default).

To tell you the truth, i've only used "NVreg_ReqAGPRate" during the last few days while i was trying to force the driver to set AGP rate to 8x. I wasn't aware what kind of paramters it takes.

The rate was set to 0x even without that parameter.

I'll no go and try with NVreg_ReqAGPRate=2 and see if that makes a difference.

Nope, no difference. I always get agp speed 4x.

I tried the following combinations:

- NVreg_ReqAGPRate=2 (4x)
- NVreg_ReqAGPRate=8 (4x)
- without NVreg_ReqAGPRate (4x)

Anything else i can try?

Did you reboot the machine in between these experiments? Please reboot, start X without the default value for NVreg_ReqAGPRate and generate a new bug report file, if the problem persists.

What does the bug report file look like with NVreg_ReqAGPRate=2?

I'd like to add that i've installed WinXP Pro on another partition with the latest NVIDIA driver for XP and the driver reports AGP speed 8x. So this doesn't look like a hardware problem, it could be specific to Linux.
