Default Black screen/Lock up after installing Nvidia drivers? Heres how i fixed it...

OK so i have had an ati for a couple of years never got openGL running, here i am doing 3D modeling without OpenGl, what a laugh.. So i go out and get a GF 6600 GT figuring if i can't get ATI drivers to work what do i have to lose trying to get NVidia drivers to work...

I am using Ubuntu Hoary, no special updates just the basic distro...
I installed the packages following packages from the repository:

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-kernel-common nvidia-settings
then:

Code:
sudo nvidia-glx-config enable
problem here is ctrl-alt-baskcspace doesn't work for me for some reason so i reboot my puter and get the "Black Screen Lockup"...

After googling for two hours, going through the whole Nvidia Linux Drivers Readme

I found out all i had to do was add the following to my xorg.conf in the device section:

Code:
Option "NvAGP" "1"
This makes the Xserver user NVidia's integrated AGPart module rather then the kernel module.. Why did i think of this? I am using a K8SMX motherboard entirely designed for use under windows... Half the functions don't work on it (integrated LAN card, Sata Controller...) So i geuss this black screen thingy has to do with my SIS chipset..

Hope y'all get this working, after three hours fighting with it I almost lost hope thinking i just wasted 150$ on an awesome video card and that I would have to install (ugh) windows just to use it...

Now if NVidia could just fancy getting the tv-out functions working the same way they do in windows (video overlay functions on tv would be nice) this would be perfect
Thanx NVidia nice work, wish other constructers would get their linux drivers "working"....

Cheers and hope u enjoy the world of OpenGL under linux!

I registered with this forum for the sole purpose of thanking you for your post.

Long story short, I have a legacy nVidia card for my machine because even though it's 4x, pushing 1.5v to the slot, and has now a 600 watt power supply with practically NO load on it, my mainboard won't recognize my new nVidia GeForce FX 5500 card.

So here I am, running kernel 2.6.14.3, custom-built, and unable to get the nVidia driver to compile. It was the latest, 6600 series driver (I forget the exact number) and I spent the time to make sure the "supported products" list included my card.

I found out, that even though I don't recall seeing my card in the supported products list for driver 7176, it apparently IS supported. My machine would start to display the GDM login screen, but would seem to freeze at a different point on displaying the image each time. I still had mouse, but that was it; no CTL-ALT-BKSP, no CTL-ALT-DEL, no CTL-ALT-Fn, no nothing.

Then I saw your post in a Google search. One stinkin' line in my xorg.conf that nobody else seemed to mention. Option NvAGP. Well, I am now using my GeForce2 Ti in Debian 3.0

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Now I just need to figure out why my glxgears won't work.

If you have any advice, I'd be much obliged!

Here's my xorg.conf; I've edited out the parts I know for a fact work and are not important e.g. the modelines that aren't being used, etc.

Now, FWIW, I've installed the nVidia drivers from nVidia's website, NOT from ports or packages. NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7167-pkg1.run was the filename. Later files would not compile; the installer script would claim no supported cards were found. The previous driver, NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6629-pkg1.run, would get into the compile but error out with some comment about data types in the code not being right (the usual problem when something won't compile for me).

I'm running the driver "nvidia" as shown by my xorg.conf above, not the 2D open "nv" driver. However, as shown, glxgears and glxinfo don't do me much good.

From the Googling I've done since my last post, I haven't figured out much. Seems the problem with most of the pages I have read has been drivers not installed or not being used right; one site recommended uninstalling the ported drivers and installing directly from nVidia's website. Well, I basically have already done that.

I've found an nVidia and OpenGL mini-HOWTO (TLDP) but it's dated 2002 and I don't trust that it's still accurate. Too much has changed in 4 years; it still mentions the old Riva chipsets, which I haven't heard about since... well... about 2002

My guess was that I simply didn't have OpenGL installed, so I started by looking for howtos on that, and that's where I read that GL is apparently integrated into the nVidia driver. So, then, what should I do?

Your help is much appreciated!

I have just discovered Xorg is not able to find the GLX module!

/var/log/Xorg.0.log :
Code:
(II) LoadModule: "glx"
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module glx
(II) UnloadModule: "glx"
(EE) Failed to load module "glx" (module does not exist, 0)

...

(II) Loading extension NV-CONTROL
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load GLX
(==) RandR enabled
Thanks again... Although, it's getting late tonight -- I think I might pick back up in the morning...

Apologies, Lonni; didn't realize what you meant at first.

Uhm, well, I have tried a few other things before I remembered to check here again, and so I'm not sure the log will help much with regards to error messages, but I can see how the card/bus/gcc/etc info can be useful so I will post that very soon.

I removed the driver #7167 and downloaded and installed driver #7174.

I noticed with each install, when I reboot, it removes NVIDIA TLS links. I googled that, and found someone had edited the installer script to remove the code which removes the symlinks (see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=264334) but it doesn't say where the links point to, and I don't have the same code in 7174. I don't know if creating symlinks would help, either. In an attempt to keep the links, I tried installing with --force-tls=new and --force-tls=classic and neither seemed to create any links or files in the directory mentioned, so I'm at a loss.

I've also been conversing with some fellows on the alt.os.linux usenet newsgroup, archived by Google: http://groups.google.com/group/alt.o...4f728f91c6a0ba is the thread in question.

I've got the driver working; it's just the GLX that it hangs on.

nvidia-bug-report.log will come in next post by itself.

Thanks for helping me out with this; I do appreciate it very much.
