Question Help, Can't start X Server

Hi,

I have a test machine based on Intel x64 processor, with a Quadro FX 330, running Solaris 10 (08/07)
During recent testing this machine got trashed and needed to be restored from a full system backup.

Now, whenever I boot the system I get the message...

*************************************
*
* The X-server can not be started on display :0...
*
* See file /var/dt/Xerrors for details
*
**************************************

If I look at Xerrors file...
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (No such file or directory).
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

All the installed components in ...
/usr/X11/lib/NVIDIA/amd64
/usr/X11/lib/NVIDIA/
/usr/X11/lib/modules/drivers/
/kernel/drv/
/kernel/drv/amd64/
... seem to have been restored correctly.

/etc/driver_aliases, /etc/driver_classes, /etc/devlink.tab and /etc/path_to_inst all seem to be unchanged from before the system restore.

I have correct entries in the /devices directory and I have a single entry in
/dev/fbs for nvidia0

But I don't seem to have any entries in /dev
(I should have entries looking like...
/dev/nvidia0
/dev/nvidia1
...
/dev/nvidiactl )

I've tried a reconfigure reboot but still don't get any entries in the /dev directory.

Anyone out there got any ideas?

Thanks & regards

Kevin

I would try removing the current drivers installed, and creating a fresh xorg.conf file.

There should be a repository out there for Solaris that has the nvidia drivers and kernel module. I prefer to install via a repo as opposed to the drivers from nvidia.com

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response.

The testing that I'm doing on this machine is likely to trash the system on a regular basis. I was hoping to find out what's missing from my "Full system backup" to allow the nVidia card to work after a restore.

Uninstalling / reinstalling the drivers is one option, simply uninstalling the nVidia drivers seems to get me a working X Windows system.

Ideally I'd like to know why, after apparently recovering the installed nVidia components from the backup, the system isn't creating the correct entries in /dev.

It seems odd to me that I get an entry in /devices but seem unable to create corresponding entries in /dev

(I'm an applications developer, not a sysadmin, so the inner workings of Solaris are pretty much a mystery to me)

Thanks & regards

Kevin
