Default Total system freeze

Hi,
Sometimes my system freezes totally (mouse doesn't move as well) when some OpenGL screensavers run. I have a 64 Mb GeForce 4 card.

Nvidia bug report is attached.

Remove fbdevhw from your X conf...

Code:
Section "Module"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "extmod"
        Load "fbdevhw"
        Load "record"
        Load "freetype"
        Load "type1"
        Load "glx"
EndSection
Your kernel is a SELinux one. I understand this doesn't work well with nvidia drivers.

Thanks, I'll try that when I get home. Will disabling SELinux help, or I have to compile kernel without SELinux?

Commented out fbdevhw and restarted with SELinux disabled. It still hangs.

SELinux shouldn't have any impact on this problem, there are no known nvidia driver post-installation problems with SELinux.

Which screensavers specifically are causing this problem? Does it reliably reproduce?

Thanks,
Lonni

I can't tell specifically which screensaver does it, since it usually happens when I'm away of my computer (may be it somehow related to screen blanking too). After I disabled all OpenGL screensavers the hang gone. Also, it always happens when I start cedega 5 - I know it also probes OpenGL acceleration, but I'm not 100% sure it is the same problem - I have no idea at which exact stage it hangs.

Its unlikely that a Cedega5 issue is the same as the OpenGL screensaver issue. Do you have a second system available with which to setup a serial console?

Thanks,
Lonni

If it happens to be SELinux which is the problem there is a trick in this thread from a user with glx troubles.

I have home 6800 LE and Fedora Core 4 (now kernel 2.6.13-1.1532_FC4),
Installation ok. When running , suddenly blanks so that needs reboot.
This problem has been ever since got 6600 LE, with older driver also. Must use xorg vesa driver. Hey-Nvidia folks- make driver much better (i have extra cooling propells) or hardware better -customers want always wait to get "next not working driver" . I 'm not going by these products anymore. And this will be the message for our company too. BTW, we are quit big player at mobile markets (Linux).

heiari,
If you'd like further assistance with this issue, please post an nvidia-bug-report.log along with information on how it can be reproduced.

Thanks,
Lonni

Thanks for reply.

Time has gone and I still have same problem.
With this latest deriver(NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1)
after successful installation I directly booted to X. It was up und running alone 24 hours. Then I started to work with Opera broser and after five minutes display blankde and powered off, no anymore keyboard reaction.
had to reset from power button.
Motherboard is Gigabyte K7 Triton (AGP8X) , no bios updates

Any ideas?

Kindly,
Ari Heikkinen
from Finland
