Default Slackware 10.2 and nvidia drivers

Hi there. I have been having issues getting slackware 10.2 to run the nvidia drivers for my 7800gt. Apparently this is a very simple procedure and those at linuxquestions.org have not had my problem. First off I installed 10.2 using the bare.i kernel (standard). Using the command "startx" I am able to boot into KDE 3.4 without problem. Now I download the Nvidia drivers from:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-5336.html

Then I run install the drivers as instructed in the readme by using the SH command. Next is editing my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. The readme only says to change my monitor settings (which I have as specified from http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...91/en/spec.htm) and change the line from Driver "vesa" to Driver "nvidia" Then "startx" and Bingo!!! Works for everyone else but unfortunately for me my screen goes black and nothing happens. Changing the driver back to Vesa and I'm back in business. Could anyone please help me with this problem. I have been struggling with it for almost a week now and it's all the more frustrating because everyone tells me "well that's it, it should work!" Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why are you using an old driver? The latest one is here:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-7676.html

I am on Slackware 10 (but it isn't really as I updated a lot of the system from source) - here is bits of my xorg.conf file:

Code:
You need to add/change like this:

# This loads the GLX module
    Load "glx"
# This loads the DRI module
# Load "dri"

then in this section

    Driver "nvidia"

add

     Option "NvAGP" "3"

The 1.0-5536 driver does not support a GeForce 7800. Please test with 1.0-7676.

Thanks,
Lonni

I have the latest drivers and Slackware 10.2.

I also have made the changes as you described yet I experience the same problem.

The log file fails when initiating the GLX server. everything else is fine

There should be two copies of libnvidia-tls.so on your system (each with a symlink). Please try renaming one pair at a time and then starting X:

/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7676
/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7676
/usr/lib/libnvidia-tls.so.1

Thanks,
Lonni
