Default Render Acceleration?

I've heard a lot of people talk about Render Acceleration and wishing that it would work properly, but I have to admit... I don't know what Render Acceleration is. Could someone fill me in? Thanks .

Render Acceleration (RenderAccel option) accelerates 2D rendering via RENDER extension (IIRC).

Thanks for replying. If you don't have RenderAccel enabled, does it use a different sort of acceleration? Or is it just software at that point? I'm guessing that RenderAccel is supposed to be faster than whatever method it uses with RenderAccel turned off.

The render extension does stuff like antialiasing and alpha blending. If you don't have renderaccel on it will be done by your CPU instead (slow).

I've always been concerned with 3D acceleration only, but it might be handy to know if my 2D performance is up to par. Can someone please recommend a benchmark for 2D acceleration?
