Unhappy TwinView: Set order of connected devices?

Dear newsgroup,

I'm trying to get TwinView to correctly work on my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M3438G notebook with OpenSuSE 10.0 installed. The graphics card is a GeForce Go 6800. I am using the official binary driver from Nvidia (version 7676). An external TFT is connected through a DVI->VGA converter to my notebook.

The problem is: As soon as the external TFT is connected to the notebook the driver sets this device (reported as a CRT) as the primary device and the internal display (DFP) as the secondary device. I would like to have the order switched because X tries to apply the device settings of the internal notebook display to the TFT resulting in a wrong resolution on the TFT and a blank screen on the DFP. I'm aware of the driver option "ConnectedMonitor" but I'm not able to set the device order with this option.

I've got TwinView working with this workaround: I've set the external TFT as primary display in SaX2 and the TFT under "DualHead" but this is no permanent solution since the TFT is not connected to the notebook all the time.

Hope you can help!

Ok, detecting the external TFT as CRT (cathode ray tube) was obviously wrong. I've set "ConnectedMonitor" option to "DFP,DFP" and now the X server does set the right modes for both displays. Unfortunately now only the internal display of my notebook gets a signal.

Come on people, nobody here who can help? It does work with Windows XP so why shouldn't it work with X.Org, too?

This is a known bug that will be corrected in a future nvidia driver release.

Thanks,
Lonni

Just to clarify, this bug will not be resolved in the upcoming driver release, but some undetermined release after the next release.

Thanks,
Lonni

I have what I think is a related problem...

I have a dual-DVI Geforce 6600 GT installed in a Home Theatre PC with Linux/MythTV. Works great in general, thanks to the excellent NVidia Linux drivers.

A minor issue I'm having with it right now is the following:

I have 2 video outputs set up, one DVI and one VGA (through a DVI->VGA converter), and in using Xv or XvMC, the video frame-swap is syncing to the VGA output, no matter which order I put them in (including both the "ConnectedMonitor" controls and swapping which output physically is in VGA vs. DVI-D).

In my /var/log/Xorg.0.log file, it pretty clearly is always picking the "CRT" output as the "first" monitor, and I've been assuming that the problem it is always going to set the frame-swap sync to the first monitor.

Is this correct, or is there some other way to select this? As an aside, I tried the option to set Xv to use the texture engine and to set the OpenGL frame-sync to "DFP-0", but it didn't change the behavior in any visible way.

When will this be fixed? It has been almost a year since you posted this. I would much prefer to have my nice lcd as my primary monitor, not my old junky crt.

Recent drivers added the 'UseDisplayDevice' option using which you can set the primary display.
