Default 7174 not working after 2.6.14-1.1637 upgrade.

Hello All,

I've been using the Livna nvidia-legacy drivers on FC4 to run a Geforce2 GTS card for some time with no problems at all. I've upgraded numerous times, and its just worked...until now that is...

Since upgrading from 2.6.13-1.1532 to 2.6.14-1.1637, I can no longer get the nvidia module to initialise the card.

Before the upgrade, the end of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log used to look like:

--snip--
(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 888
(==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(--) NVIDIA(0): Linear framebuffer at 0xE8000000
(--) NVIDIA(0): MMIO registers at 0xFD000000
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA GPU detected as: GeForce2 GTS/GeForce2 Pro
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoBIOS: 02.15.01.11.02
(--) NVIDIA(0): Interlaced video modes are supported on this GPU
(II) NVIDIA(0): Detected AGP rate: 4X
(--) NVIDIA(0): VideoRAM: 65536 kBytes
(II) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s): CRT-0
--snip--

Since the upgrade, the log looks like this:

--snip--
(II) Setting vga for screen 0.
(**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 888
(==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(--) NVIDIA(0): Linear framebuffer at 0xE8000000
(--) NVIDIA(0): MMIO registers at 0xFD000000
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
--snip--

So what it looks like is that even though the nvidia module loads, it never detects the Nvidia GPU.

Of course I have the appropriate modules for each kernel version:

$ rpm -qa | grep nvidia-legacy
kernel-module-nvidia-legacy-2.6.13-1.1532_FC4-1.0.7174-0.lvn.1.4
kernel-module-nvidia-legacy-2.6.14-1.1637_FC4-1.0.7174-0.lvn.1.4

Any suggestions anyone?

Is the nvidia kernel module really loaded? lsmod will tell you. If not modprobe it and try again.

DOH!

I had assumed that it was being loaded, because the Xorg.0.log said so. I guess I never actually checked with an lsmod.

On further investigation, the load was failing with "nvidia: Unknown parameter `NVreg_ModifyDeviceFiles'" being printed by dmesg...

Removing this option from modules.conf meant that the driver now loads and seems to work fine. I'll now have to track down what put it there, and I'm betting its coming from the nvidia-glx startup scripts that (I think) come from livna...

Anyway - thanks.
