Default NVidia drivers lock-up x-server

I've finally had enough and removed the NVidia drivers from my system. The latest problem I've come across is a total lock up of my x-server (except for the mouse pointer) whenever I use GQview. I can log in via ssh but nothing but a re-boot will restart the display. I have also heard of other people having the same problem and reports that older drivers do work (though not on my system).
I'm using Gentoo ~x86 with kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r2 and a GeForce4 Ti 4600.
Everything works great with the NV driver.
I came to the conclusion that there is no point in bothering with the NVidia driver as not only is it not stable enough to use in the first place, if I can't even get transparency to work then there is no point in having it!
Sorry if this seems like a rant but I'm sick to death of NVidia, by the time they get the drivers to work the cards will be obsolete! Think I'll get ATI card next time!

If you have RenderAccel set to true in your xorg.conf - unset it.

andrew,
We can't investigate bugs that haven't been reported to us. Did you submit a bug report and reproduction instructions?

Thanks,
Lonni

Many thanks for the replies, yes it was RenderAccel causing GQview the locking up problem.
I don't wish to appear rude but I didn't submit a bug report because the locking up of X with NVidia drivers is so common that I'd assumed this bug had already been reported.
In fact if I even try to enable transparency with the NVidia drivers I get an instant lock up. Am I correct in thinking this is what is needed in xorg.conf because, as soon as I add it, X locks up when I restart kdm.

Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
Option "RENDER" "Enable"
EndSection

I'll file a bug report if it helps but again, I think this is a well known error.

Its entirely possible that you're hitting multiple bugs with the same symptoms.

The Render and Composite extensions are not the same functionality.

There are many known X bugs that involve the Composite extension that are unrelated to the nvidia driver.

Enhancement work on RenderAccel is planned for a future driver release (however, not in the next release).

If removing RenderAccel from your X configuration resolves the instability, then that is the best workaround that I can suggest at this time.

Without seeing a bug report, I can't really comment further, however you may want to try upgrading X to 6.9-RC2 (or 7.0) to see if that has any impact on the problems you're experiencing.

Thanks,
Lonni

You can generate a bug report by running nvidia-bug-report.sh as root, and then posting the resulting bug report here.

Thanks,
Lonni
