Why won't you just make the nVidia driver aware of this change in Kernels >=2.6.15 ? Wouldn't this be the better solution or is it just impossible to do?
nVidia driver version 1.0-7676 works quite well with 2.6.15-rc5, but there are still dmesg errors, as I already had expected. Although I'm happy it works, because it would be horrible to use 2.6.14 any longer with my computer...

I'm very much looking forward to 1.0-8XXX and your patch

The problem with conditionalizing support (or workarounds) for a given feature or kernel interface (or kernel bugs) based on the Linux version is that distributors frequently backport changes. For this reason, the NVIDIA Linux graphics driver uses a combination of compile and runtime tests. Determining which kernels to use vm_insert_page() on is simple enough, it just doesn't make much sense to post a patch against 1.0-7676 that fully restores compatibility with Linux 2.6.15-rc* now that the 1.0-8xxx release is close, and use of 1.0-8168 is not recommended.

That a patch for 7676 does not make too much sense is clear to me, I was referring to 8XXX - you said after 8XXX is released, you are going to release a patch, so I thought 8XXX will not have this patch included...
But the main thing is, that everything simply WORKS for now

I'll post a patch for the upcoming release, which isn't aware of vm_insert_page() (the interface didn't exist, or at least wasn't accessible, when said driver was built).

So you already have a "ready" driver which just is not released?

If yes, what the hell are you waiting for? Release it!

Thank you very much for addressing this.

How does one apply the patch to NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8174-pkg2.run? Or am I completely missing the idea?

To apply the patch, follow the instructions below. I will post an updated version of this patch to the official 1.0-8174 updates thread soon.

# sh /path/to/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8174-pkg2.run --extract-only
# cd NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8174-pkg2
# patch -p0 < /path/to/NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-8174-1427453.diff.txt
# ./nvidia-installer -n

What do you want to modify in the patch to make it "official"?

@shutdown: there's a corner case that may still lead to problems with the initial patch; you can find the updated one here: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...88&postcount=3.
