Default Refresh rate issue.

Hi,

With the 7676 drivers I could get 85Hz refresh rate fine on my iiyama S702GT CRT monitor. The 8174 drivers dont let me, it gives 75Hz max. I cycled back & forth 3-4 times & always the same result, no change to xorg.conf (I don't let the 8174 install program edit my xorg.conf). I've even tried using modelines but they dont seem to work either. I couldnt find any other posts resolving this so I hope I'm not repeating anyone else ('kriko' in the 7676 forum mentioned this but seemed not to get it resolved, and 8174 is a different version).

Thanks,

Mr Marmalade.

For 1.0-7676 and 1.0-8174, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 5

and then attach the resulting X log (both of them).

Thanks,
Lonni

Ok, here's the files I think you wanted. The /var/log/Xorg.0.log files are in it if its them that you wanted. In them you can see the differing available resolution/refresh rate combinations.

NOTE:

8174 -
(II) NVIDIA(0): My Monitor: Using hsync range of 31.00-79.00 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): My Monitor: Using vrefresh range of 56.00-75.00 Hz
I dont know where these values came from.

7676 -
(II) NVIDIA(0): My Monitor: Using hsync range of 27.00-96.00 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): My Monitor: Using vrefresh range of 50.00-160.00 Hz
These are the correct values from the xorg.conf.

Thanks,

Mr Marmalade.

You can try adding the option:
Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false"

For 1.0-8174 the default has changed to "true" so the HorizSync and VertRefresh in you xorg.conf are ignored.

From your log file (8147):
Frequency information for CRT-0:
(II) NVIDIA(0): HorizSync : 31.000-79.000 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): VertRefresh : 56.000-75.000 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): (HorizSync from EDID)
(II) NVIDIA(0): (VertRefresh from EDID)
(II) NVIDIA(0): My Monitor: Using hsync range of 31.00-79.00 kHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): My Monitor: Using vrefresh range of 56.00-75.00 Hz

According to this your monitor can only do 75 Hz ?

The values that you are seeing with 1.0-8174 for the hsync and vrefresh were obtained from your display's EDID. If you look at your X log when running with 1.0-7676, you'll see that the values you provided in your xorg.conf were deemed erroneous, however the driver used them anyway.

However, more importantly, if you look at the X logs included in the two bug reports you just attached, and search for the section that begins with EDID, you'll see that there are no supported modes running at 85Hz.

In other words, you were actually hitting a bug in 1.0-7676, and its suspect whether you were really getting 85Hz. The correct behavior is now in force with 1.0-8174, however if you want to override the safe values that the CRT manufacturer specified, you can try using the IgnoreEDID X option, and specify a modeline which drives the CRT at 85Hz. You do risk damaging your CRT by doing this.

I must ask, how or where did you determine that you were using an 85Hz refresh rate with 1.0-7676?

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi again,

The Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false" thing fixed the problem, so thatnks mo_x. I first noticed it wasn't at 75Hz just when I loaded X for the first time with the 8174 drivers, sensitive eyes or something , and when I checked using the monitors built-in menu thing it displayed 75Hz when it would usually display 85hz. My monitor is definately capable of 1024x768@85Hz & even 1280x1024@85Hz (I've got the manual in front of me), so it seems strange that it has some inbuilt EDID thing that contradicts this.

Another thought; my monitor is pretty old 1998, is it possible that the xorg/nVidia system invents some reasonably safe values if the monitor doesnt have an EDID thing? >>> Hmm probably not, because the log file seems to show more info for 8174 than 7676. Its not right though! Or maybe old ones should be probed differently.

Thankyou,

Mr Marmalade.

I've attached the fixed settings bug-report file also.

Default Re: Refresh rate issue.

I've found something new so I thought I'd just note in case it might help anyone else with the new 8756 drivers. Following on from the previous issue in this thread, I installed the 8756 drivers but my refresh rate was even lower this time. Again I noticed this difference by eye & the then monitor's on-screen-display confirmed it was operating at 70Hz, whereas I seem to need 85Hz for comfort. With the 8756 drivers the xorg.conf line (Option "UseEdidFreqs" "false") no longer solves the issue. But I did manage to find a new solution. By scanning through the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file it is apparent that the 'Modes' value in the 'Screen' section of xorg.conf has to now be input more carefully.

Note the following two lines as shown in /var/log/Xorg.0.log;

(II) NVIDIA(0):"1024x768" : 1024x768@70.1 Hz (from: X Server, VESA, EDID)

and

(II) NVIDIA(0):"1024x768_85" : 1024 x 768 @ 85.0 Hz (from: X Server, VESA)

So I changed xorg.conf from, Modes "1024x768" to Modes "1024x768_85" and the problem was solved.

Regards,

Mr Marmalade.

EDIT: This isn't a 'problem' as such as it is all mentioned in the driver 'Programming Modes' appendix.

Mr. Marmalade,

Thanks, you saved my life.
I was getting the same problem with the new drivers too- Stuck at 70HZ

My Samtrom 76DF was working well @ 1024x768 @ 85HZ with 81.78 and with the new drivers i was shocked with a 70HZ output.
