Default No sound with NFORCE-0310_Driver+nforce430+Ubuntu5.10

All,
I'm having no luck getting the new NFORCE drivers to work with the following setup:
Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy
NFORCE-Linux-x86-1.0-0310
Mother board: GA-K8N51GMF-9, Nvidia Chip set: nforce 430
compiler: gcc-3.4

Both the nvet and nvsound kernel modules load with no reported issues. The nvet works great but the nvsound does not seem to work at all, I have checked and udev has not even created any nodes for the sound under /dev

Attached is my nforce bug report.
I'm open for any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot this issue.
Regards,
Shane

I have a few questions:
0) Can you elaborate on what "nvsound does not seem to work at all" means? 1) Can you run nvmixer to adjust the settings?
2) Please post the output from lspci

Also which BIOS version are you using:

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,

There are no audio nodes present in /dev, example: There is no /dev/dsp*
Shouldn't udev create the default nodes in /dev when the nvsound module is loaded into the kernel?

No, I can slide the rulers but when I let go an error box pops up that says:
"Volume Set Failed"

nvmixer does not seem to detect any sound card, please see attached file "nvmixer.jpg" for details.

I also checked again to make sure the nvsound module is loaded:
lsmod |grep nvsound
nvsound 1542904 0
soundcore 9600 1 nvsound

I'm using the F2 bios.

I'm not seeing anything unusual or bad from the information you've provided thus far. Are you using the official Ubuntu kernel? Does the kernel you're using have OSS support?

I'll see if I can track down your motherboard and reproduce this.

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,
Uhm, I assumed that the kernel had OSS support compiled in but that may not be the case, I will look at the kernel config file to see and if it doesn't I will recompile the kernel with it in.

That would be great if you could check at your end against the same motherboard.

Shane

I just checked the config file and the following is set:
CONFIG_SOUND_OSS=m

Also I have attached the kernel config file to this message. (config-2_6_12_10_686.txt)

Lonni,
At this point I'm going to wait to hear from you since I can't think of anything else to do as a test. Unless you can think of anything else for me to try out.
Regards,
Shane

Unfortunately, I'm not having any success locating your motherboard here to attempt to reproduce this problem.

Just to cover all the bases, you've verified that sound is turned on in the BIOS?

Thanks,
Lonni

Lonni,
I have verifed that the sound is turned on in the bios but I will check again tonight.

Also:
If you think it would help I can give you ssh access to the machine having the probems.
Regards,
Shane

I suppose that ssh access can't hurt, perhaps I'll find something that is causing this problem. Please email linux-bugs@nvidia.com, referencing the URL for this thread, with the ssh access information.

Thanks,
Lonni
