nvidia graphics driver install program runs fine, but nothing happens

When I run the nvidia installer program everything seems just fine, no errors. When I reboot I have no errors, and when I startx the white nvidia screen comes up and my monitor splashes before going into Gnome in the correct resolution of 1680x1050.

In Fedora 4, when I click Applications -> System Tools the option for "NVIDIA X Server Settings" is there, and everything in that applet seems to be fine, it even reports the temperature of the video card.

Everything SEEMS fine, however when I go to "Display" in System Settings the video card selected is "VESA Driver (Generic)". OpenGL stuff doesn't work very fast if at all in this mode, the simplest GL screen savers are incredibly slow.

Did I miss something? I went through the readme and their "linux newbie tips" they had and still can't figure it out.


Video card is an XFX 7800GT.

You'll need to talk to the Fedora folks about any problems with their tools. If I had to guess, I'd say that the 'System Settings' tool is looking at the name for the driver provided in xorg.conf, which you likely never changed.

Regardless, please generate and post a bug report if you'd like further assistance with this issue.
