Same problem with a compaq presario 1429IT.

Motherboard: MSI-7093 OEM
Chipset: Rs480M
Bios: HP 3.40
Graphic card: 6200 with turbochache pci-e

SO:
WindowsXP: OK
Suse 10.0: 7176 hangs on power saving; 8178 hangs randomly

I put in a XFX Nvidia GeForce 6600 passive cooler, and now the lockups are gone!!

On chipset nvidia (nforce4) or intel (915) it's OK for me too.

XFX Nvidia GeForce 6600, it's pci, pci-express ?

After many tests, with driver 8756 it's better.
If you don't use 3D application (glxgears for example), it's stable !!
You can put "glx" in XF86Config-4 or xorg.conf, it's OK too.
