Exclamation Black scr hard crash on VT-change/startx/logout x86_64 AMD FC4

Dear forum,

I am getting about 50% probability of black-screen hard crash when I do any of the following: startx (via usual boot sequence), logout, or virtual terminal swapping via Fn-F* (specifically Fn-F7). The machine then does not respond to anything including ssh and needs power-button hard reboot. The problem is not specific to 8174 (can reproduce on 7676).

I have (from Thinkmate.com) dual opteron 250, Tyan K8SE (S2892 with current BIOS 2.00, nforce linux drivers 0310), 8*1GB RAM, NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400, connected via single DVI or VGA to Dell 2405FPW LCD. Fedora Core 4 kernel 2.6.14, 1644 SMP, selinux disabled. Staying within X11, it seems solid, doing OpenGL rendering, changing resolutions, unlocking screen, etc. But it is very frustrating to reboot so often! (xorg's non-accelerated nv driver is stable).

Tests tried (all of which have no effect on the problem):
* installed the relevant-seeming patches (1423627 and 1432714)
* kernel boot parameters noapic, acpi=off
* xorg.conf: NvAGP 0, RenderAccel 0, NoDDC, various resolutions.
* enabling IOMMU in BIOS.
* eth2 ifup rather than eth0 (someone posted on this).
* 7676 drivers (same apart from it chooses a different LCD resolution).
I cannot backdate to 6629 drivers (which are the last stable ones I can use on my inspiron 8100 laptop w/ FC4) since the warpx FC4 patch fails on x86_64

Zipped nvidia bug report, taken during X11 operation, attached (no logfiles are written to during crash). I really appreciate all the hard work done in this forum. Since my set-up is an increasingly popular one, I'm sure many others will benefit from debugging this!

Thanks for any advice you can give, Alex

Default Re: Black scr hard crash on VT-change/startx/logout x86_64 AMD FC4

Just an update - Installing the new FC4 1653 kernel solved the problem: I can now move between virtual terminals, startx, and logout without system freezes!
I have no idea what they did that fixed it. Kernel update achieved via:

yum update kernel-smp kernel-smp-devel
Boot to init 3, run the NFORCE and NVIDIA driver installers. Init 5, and works!

Now all I have to do is figure out why xterm uses 100% CPU on scrolling
and "time cat /etc/termcap" takes 23 seconds! Better move to gnome-terminal.
