I suspect this is a Gentoo packaging problem.

I briefly checked the Gentoo forums, it appears that this is a known problem with the 1.0-8178 ebuild. You can use the official NVIDIA .run installer or try the workaround suggested on the Gentoo forums.

Fix to allow nvidia driver to load
The removal of X11R6 from the symlinks in the ebuild caused problems that cause this ebuild to not work. X will abend with messages about not being able to load nvidia, glx, etc. This one line change IS necessary to get this ebuild to work as 8174 did. Edit the ebuild at line 353: local libdir=usr/X11R6/${pkglibdir} where X11R6 is added to the path. Whether this is a linking problem, a hard coded path problem, etc. remains to be seen. At least this will get the driver functioning. |
