Are the newest Linux drivers multithread like the Windows drivers?
Can somebody explain to me what exactly these drivers do in parallel? I can''t imagine they can split up the encoding of the GLX instruction stream.

The linux drivers are based on the windows drivers and as those are multithreaded so are the linux drivers. I'm not sure exactly what parts they made multithreaded but you really need a dualcore cpu or perhaps one with hyperthreading to take advantage of it. Perhaps you can find some more info on sites with windows driver benchmarks and comparisons with old drivers.
