Angry ldconfig problem with Nvidia libraries

Context: SuSE 9.1 distro, manually updated to kernel , XFree86-4.4, ldconfig (GNU libc) 2.3.3

I use a lot of symbolic links when I manually install the nvidia software into
my system. A typical setup (e.g. /usr/lib/tls) would be:
libnvidia-tls.so -> libnvidia-tls.so.1
libnvidia-tls.so.1 -> libnvidia-tls.so.1.0
libnvidia-tls.so.1.0 -> libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.NNNN

Where NNNN is a NVidia software release number.
I have a setup script that automatically sets up the link at the lowest
level i.e. for libnvidia-tls.so.1.0

I typically have more than one NVidia release installed, for example
7167 and 7676.

When I run ldconfig, it is automagically overwriting the intermediate
symbolic link, e,g, libnvidia-tls.so.1 to point at the most recent version
of the NVidiia software, even if the so.1.0 link is already setup
to point at an older version. So I get
libnvidia-tls.so.1 -> libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7676
libnvidia-tls.so.1.0 -> libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7167

Needless to say this breaks things if I'm using the 7167 version elsewhere.
Only some of the libraries I've set up this way are affected
everything else is fine.

- I didn't think ldconfig would find the libraries with the NNNN suffix
- I don't understand why the existing so.1 link is being overwritten
when it points to a valid so.1.0

this may be the first time I'vetried to use an older version (7167) when
a newer version (7676) is also installed.
