old GForce and new drivers

Hi there,

My linux box with a Gforce2 still gets freeze and I get this error:

NVRM: Xid: 8, Channel 00000000

I'm running 1.0.8178 version on my AMD64 (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2.run).

Is there any workaround for this?
Any patch?
Buy a new card (only if I'm 100% sure I won't get this bug) ?
Should I go back to 1.0.6629 (after 1.0.7167 the Xid 8 nightmare
has started)?
