Question question about Dell 2405FPW 24-inch & NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256MB DDR3 Dual

Hi

I am not an expert in this area, but you all seem to be. I have a Gateway FX400XL desktop with NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI & TV-Out

my desktop memory, if that matters, is 4GB (4096MB) 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM Dual Channel (4-1024MB modules)

I would like to upgrade my monitor to the Dell UltraSharp 2405FPW 24-inch Wide Aspect Flat Panel LCD Monitor, and be able to run it at higher resolutions. I noticed that on the Dell site it says, To optimize this monitor's performance, your system must be able to support WUXGA resolution (1920x1200).

I see on the Dell site, it lists as compatible video cards,
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 GTO 256MB **Yes **Yes
NVIDIA GeForce 6800 256MB **Yes **Yes

Will I be OK with my NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra with 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI & TV-Out card?

Thanks in advance!!

Yes, and it also should be able to drive the upcoming 3007fpw, which is 2560x1600

Hello

Thanks for responding. Wow, that 30 incher is tempting.

The 2405FPW is geat, you'll love it.

BTW, are you planning to game on it or the 30" LCD or do you mainly want it for the desktop space?

Hi

I don't game, just for desktop work. Photoshop stuff, nothing fancy. Do you think it will actually be too big?

By the way, I noticed you have the Sennheiser HDR 45 Wireless Headphones .

I watch a lot of DVDs on my computer and have been waiting for the Logitech Wireless headphones for PC to become available. Do you recommend the Sennheisers for PC use?

No, I don't think the 24" will be too big. I was just concerned you'd try to do a lot of gaming on it and with the native res being 1920x1200, that can be pretty tough on systems.

The HDR 45s work well with my PCs but there are a couple of things I don't like about them. They're a little uncomfortable for extended sessions and the battery life is basically what it advertises. Reach the limit and they go off. I have some AR wireless headphones that I use with my home theater system and they far surpass their advertised battery life. They're also a lot more comfortable for extended periods of time but the Sennheisers have a much, much cleaner sound (the bass is very tight). The Senns also automatically tune really quickly. The ARs only take around 30 seconds (sometimes, sometimes they tune faster) but when waiting, that 30 seconds seems to take forever. The HDR 45s take a second. The ARs do better further away from the base but when close to the base, the HDR 45s are probably a little better (talking about any static or interference that might occur). Those are the only two brands I've used so far.

Do you think 30" is too big for desktop work? I wonder when that new Dell monitor is really going to be available?

Here are the headphones I am waiting to come out. They seem relatively lightweight and have a huge range (not that I need that).

thanks again for responding.

I'm not sure about the 30". I'd need to play around with one first to know. I asked Oldskool about the 30" Apple he was using and the main thing that concerned me was the high native resolution / needing the text size to be as large as possible to be able to read it since the native res is so high. I was a little concerned about that with the 24" Dell LCD though but it has been fine. At 1280x1024, my usual desktop resolution, things were easy to read so I was concerned that 1920x1200 would be too small. It has been fine though. BTW, I don't really like changing Windows font size since some dialogs and other things don't look like (text gets cut off, etc.).

I picked up the Sennheiser RS130s today. They're wireless and support surround sound (although it looks like it just uses SRS for that). I got them because they look like they'll be more comfortable and the battery life is much longer (if I'm reading the specs right). Once I get a chance to use them some, I'll let you know how they are. I tried to see if I could find the Logitech's that you're looking at locally, since they look pretty good, but I didn't find any. That's when I stumbled across the 130s.

Edit: They're not charged yet but trying them on, they're much more comfortable than the HDR 45s and I like the charging cradle on the RS130s a lot better. It's just a bar that you hang them on and that bar touches a couple of exposed areas on the headphone's head-piece. On the HDR 45s, it was sometimes a pain to get them to sit properly in the cradle to recharge so the new way is much better.

Edit 2: Okay, I really like the RS130s. They have improved the things I didn't like about the HDR45s so I'm really happy with them so far. I think I'm going to get another pair and use them with my home theater setup also.

Thanks for everyone's help with this question. My Dell 24 inch arrived today and is installed and looks fantastic. Seems plenty big, LOL!

Now, just to change my habits to figure out how to best take advantage of the screenspace!
