Default Can't Change Speaker Configuration

I've an Athlon 64 rig on a Gigabyte K8 Triton motherboard. Recently I installed the nVidia nForce 1.0-0310 drivers for the AMD64 platform. When I try to change the speaker configuration using the 'nvmixer' application, I get an error pop-up saying "Volume Set Failed".

I keep trying to change the configuration to 5.1 surround but the configuration doesn't "take hold" either. As soon as I restart the nvmixer application, the Speaker settings are back to the default of Headphones.
