Default Ut2k3 - does it REALLY benefit that much from DX9?

With UT2k3, I was wondering... if you had a GF4 TI4400 128ddr and a R9500Pro 128DDR, both at stock speeds around 275/550... would the R9500Pro 128DDR run UT2k3 better purely because of DX9? I know UT2k3 is suppose to be DX9 capable, but has anyone really seen a difference in it since MS released DX9 and ATI released Cat3.0?

Note: please no responses of "Nvidia is better than ATI, therefore the GF4 would be better than the R9500". My interest here is DX9's general performance, and its affect on UT2k3.

Isn't DX9 more about features than about performance?

DX9 has no effect whatsoever on anything unless it is specifically used.

So no, they would perform as if both were DX9 or DX8 parts. Doesn't matter.

people have generally said that after installing DX9 games seem to run smoother. of course it could just be the placebo effect.

...and games run smoother for me if I play naked, caffeinated, and under the full moon.

I'll have to try that, does it require an service packs to be installed? And I have 512DDR, is that enough? LOL

A reasonable question would also be: Does it benefit from DirectX 8 ? It uses about 1 feature from DirectX 8, possibly a pixel shader water effect and perhaps a few optimised shaders for other rendering, otherwise it's DirectX 7 all the way (feature wise).

Now answering you question, Short answer: No. Longer answer: The only benefit you will get using DirectX 9 with the current build of UT is any internal performance optimisations and bug fixes that happen to go along with the DirectX version. Future builds of UT may use DX9 interfaces and will eventually use its features. For now, if it gave you an extra fps, then you're lucky.

the water is done with cubemaps, not shaders. cubemaps as we all know and love, are DX7.

ut2003 does use at least vertex shaders, to optimize performance. no higher poly count, no extra effects, etc.

I'm not actually here for a conversation, but directx9 does more than just graphics...and I'm not so sure the audio, input, and networking parts aren't why people think it's faster. (So maybe it is in some ways.)

But hey, thats all good by me. I don't think directsound and such are split into levels like d3d is.

i don't think MS has changed their directsound or directinput drivers in a long time. DX8 did add some MIDI sythesizer

i could be wrong. but i think they have stayed essentially the same for quite some time. the networking drivers have been tweaked a little at times, so i'll believe that.

Believe what you will....
a few tiny snips
'The DirectSound application programming interface (API) has not been significantly revised for DirectX 9.0. However, many performance enhancements have been implemented.'
'Less reliable connections should now perform better with improved DirectPlay protocol behavior.'
