You can disable the framebuffer with the following kernel parameters:
video=vga16ff vga=normal

I still need you to provide the bug report that I requested back on January 4, however you need to remove the IgnoreEDID option from your X configuration before doing so.

Thanks,
Lonni

Unhappy Re: Black screen for NVIDIA RIVA TNT2 under Ubuntu Breezy (7174)

I've added the requested boot parameters to /boot/grub/menu.lst (a part of this file is attached). I rebooted to text only, and used startx with logverbose 5. Still got the black screen. See attached bug report.

I connected using SSH and tried 'startx' from the remove session. I got the following output:

Code:
xauth: creating new authority file /home/barak/.serverauth.8316

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
        If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
         at http://wiki.X.Org
 for help.
Still, I see nothing on the screen.

Another attempt - I rebooted the machine. This time I ran startx from SSH, so that I can see what's going on (the screen turns black quite fast when I use startx from the main display). I've copied the last few lines of the console into a file. It's attached (console.txt). The repeated warning message at the end occurs every few seconds. During this time, the main display is black.

According to the latest bug report, you're still loading the vesafb module, and the X log is not a verbose X log generated with the command I provided.

Try setting:
video=vesafbff vga=normal

and if that doesn't help, please provide the bug report that I requested earlier this month.

Thanks,
Lonni

I changed the boot parameters, as you suggested, to:

root=/dev/hdb1 ro quiet splash video=vesafbff vga=normal

I rebooted to the console and typed:

sudo startx -- -logverbose 5 -verbose 5

The screen went blank. I used SSH from another computer and ran nvidia-bug-report. The result is attached. The last 3 but reports I've attached are all from running startx as above. I did try modprobe nvidia the previous time, but I don't know if that makes I change. I didn't do it now.

Please advise.

vesafb is still loaded in your bug report.

The X log in your bug report is still not a verbose X log. It looks like maybe the CRT that you're using is so old that it might not have an EDID?

I don't understand, I've used video=vesafbff (you can see the exact line in the previous post). Also, I'm using startx -- -logverbose 5 -verbose 5. I even deleted /var/log/X* before using startx to make sure the log is indeed written. I can't see how this can create anything but a verbose log.

As for not parsing the EDID. Indeed it might be that my monitor doesn't support it. It's a 5-year old 15" LCD display (not CRT) by Gateway called FPD1500. It has only digital input. It was one of the early LCD displays, but it works great. I actually read somewhere that sometimes not reading the EDID is caused by the video card, and that NVidia have a reputation of not being the best at doing this task (still, I agree my monitor is old).

What should I change?

A verbose log is usually nothing more than a log with the EDID. Sorry if I didn't explain that earlier.

I'm afraid that I don't have any other suggestions at this point, other than to try building your own kernel (something newer than the 2.6.12 you have) and see if that helps at all.

I decided to check if it's a monitor or a card issue. I took another DVI device (sadly, I couldn't find a monitor, so I used an Optoma projector I borrowed from work) and connected it. I had no problem working with X using the VESA driver. When I switced to the NVIDIA driver, it was all the same :-(

I'm attaching the bug report, you'll see that EDID information is available, and the native projector's resolution (1024 x 768) is picked up. Still, I see a black wall (well, gray, blacks aren't that good on this projector :-))

So what are my options? Chances are it's the card. I can try a different kernel version, but if that's the case, can you please recommend a kernel version for which I won't need to compile? (A one that the installer can download from the NVidia site) I hope I can get the newer kernel from Ubuntu, and not compile it, as well.

Thanks.

There are no recent nvidia kernel modules in the 1.0-7174 driver, since that driver existed long before any of the recent kernels were released.
