1.0-8178_problems_with_X

HI

I'm running Kubuntu 5.10 with kernel 2.6.12-10-686-smp & X Window System Version 6.8.2.
Device "NVIDIA Corporation NV11GL [Quadro2 MXR/EX]

1.0-8178 installation compleated ok; but X will not start.
I get:
ERR: API mismatch: NVIDIA kernel module is version 1.0.7667 but this X module is version 1.0.8178.

Any suggestions ?

Run your 8178 .run file again with the param --uninstall.

When it's done, read /var/log/nvidia-installer.log, it will list a bunch of files that it didn't remove because they weren't part of the 8178 install -- remove them all (carefully, there are similar named files).

Then re-install, this should clear up this particular error.

Thanks for the tip. I have checked /var/log/nvidia-installer.log; there was only one symlink which wasn't deleted. I deleted symlink, reinstalled the driver and this time no problems.
I had a TwinView working, did several tweaks to the xorg.conf created by the nvidia-xconfig, restarting X after each individual change without a glitch.

When I restart the PC the problem reapears:
1. first i get an error: - not starting X display manager (xdm); it is not the default display manager. Now I'm stuck with console login.
2. I login as a root, type in xdm commmand; screen flickers a few times and than it returns to prompt. No xdm.log is created.
3. if I type in startx command I get the same error masage as mentioned in original post.

Any suggestions?

I have the same problem on a regular Ubuntu 5.10. But this solution doesn't work for me, i've tried it in any possible ways, but i still end up reverting to the 7667. After uninstalling with 8178 i find no listing of files in /var/log/nvidia-installer.log, nor does uninstalling using 7667 work. I'm using the precompiled 2.6.12-10 kernel from the repositories, i've tryed reinstalling the kernel, source, headers, i even searched for files containing "nvidia" and deleted any symlinks but the same error persists. I also deleted any files with the name 'nvidia' in /lib/linux-restricted-modules and /lib/modules, still the same.

Any suggestions?

The symlink I have deleted was:

/usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1

I also did the;

~#: cp /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7667 deleted.libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.7667
(this file was not referenced in nvidia-install.log)


That enabled me to reinstall the driver, but on first reboot the X will not start;

ERR = not starting xdm, it is not default window manager

It was impossible to restart X (with my knoledge), so I have to --uninstall the driver. After that no more problems. The system work fine with 7667.

The only way that I could get 8178 to work with 2.6.14.5 was to rename the /lib/tls folder to make it inaccessible.

None of the solution so far have worked. I just can't get 8178 to boot. There's gotta be something in the kernel modules that's still 7667 but i've got no clue as to what.

To highlight my exact situation:
OS: Ubuntu Breezy Badger 5.10
Kernel: 2.6.12-10-386(image downloaded from the repositories, precompiled)
Nvidia driver 7667 works well everytime. 8178 works after beeing installed but after a reboot, when X starts it fails to start and displays the exact same error:

ERR: API mismatch: NVIDIA kernel module is version 1.0.7667 but this X module is version 1.0.8178.

Edit: YESS! I got it to work! The solution was to install the kernel image and headers, which i had done, then sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`. Then uninstall whatever driver ver. you had whilst receiving an error about a missing symlink and install a new 8178. And it works!

It appears to me that that there is something wrong in compiling the nVIDIA kernel module an the system cleanup after installlation. My be we should try to use different switches during installation; my be some new error massages will reapper an show us the right way.

I had try to look after any 7667 leftovers after installation but have found none which I cold delete/move to backup folder and have an operational system.

Once again ,many happy computing days in the year 2006.

Which driver do I have to --uninstall. The only one I have installed is 7667 which get installed with Kubuntu. (I don't have an installation program)

Certainly:

-I also had the kernel source and header files installed, keep em that way.
-the uninstall part is entirely up to you, if you have 7667, by all means --uninstall it with the 7667 installer, or you could just install 8178 which will perform the uninstall automaticaly. What matters is that you've removed the linux-restricted-modules and nvidia-glx, this is the key.
Either use synaptic(i think it was Kynaptic in KDE) or in the terminal/Konsole type this command: sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`. Type the 'uname -r' command to get your exact kernel version, in example my output is "2.6.12-10-386", so i would have to: 'apt-get --purge remove linux-restricted-modules-2.6.12-10-386'
Once you've removed this you can go ahead and upgrade to 8178 and it should work. It does for me anyway.

So, I manage to uninstall 7667 from Ubuntu 5.10 and "succesfully" installed 8178 but when I reboot it won't start X, it keeps me on a tty login screen, I try startx with no much help from Xorg.log, but if I reinstall 8178 I get X to start without problem, but on the next reboot ... it starts all over again... Any clues?? I'm I missing something??

@HellSpawn: chances are you're still seeing problems caused by the linux-restricted-modules package(s), as implied earlier in this thread.
