Xfree86 4.2.99.3 is a development release and is not stable. It is not intended for production use.

whachoo talkin' about, jive turkey? that pre-release is about as stable as it gets so i take it no one has gotten it to work with nvidia drivers. s'all good, i'll just have to wait until ::looks at watch:: june or so before the official 4.3 release for nvidia support. |

The XRANDR extension works properly with the 4191 driver, too, and OpenGL is rock solid. Regards, wizdom. |

I just recently updated to the Mandrake Cooker build of 4.2.99 with the 4191 drivers. Tribes 2 and Solder of Fortune run at a 43Hz vertical refresh rate, which is pretty painful for the eyes. Quake 3 and my desktop seem to have no problem, though. This is all at 1024x768. If the xserver follows my config file, it's not even allowed to go below 55Hz.

right, it was a PEBKAC thing. i didn't reinstall the nvidia drivers after i installed X so X installed it's GLX drivers and overwrote the nvidia ones. a simple driver reinstall, which totally slipped my mind, saved the day!
also, the new X rux, especially those colored-glass cursors ![]() |

I have a newer Dell Inspiron 8200 and was having problems getting higher rez's and would only give the the one default
rez.....So with the suggestion that my computer is less then a year old, I went out to www.XFree86.org and downloaded the latest version that I thought was stable (after comments above I'm no longer sure if any is stable), but anyway I loaded it........Now the only X window manager I can get to come up is twm........So, how do I get back to a normal window manager????? |

Replace /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc with the you distro's original xinitrc file. You did back that one up, right?
If not, you can create a ~/.xinitrc file that just contains exec startkde for KDE, or exec gnome-session for Gnome. The filenames are different if you do the GUI login thing, but I don't remember offhand what they are. .Xsession perhaps?
