Default Should I buy 6800 GT AGP or wait for 7800 GS AGP?

Does anyone think a 7800 GS AGP is coming out with the next 2 or 3 months? Or should I just buy a BFG 6800 GT AGP? I just want to play Q4 @ 1024xHQx2XAA on my P4 3.0C without huge shadow-induced frame rate dips ala my X800 XT.

i'd wait for the 7800GS, it's prolly gonna be pretty nicely priced, considering that you can get a 7800GT for under $300 already. extra features and better performance over the 6800 will make it worth the wait!

But there is a chance it will never come out on AGP, right?

I wouldn't count on it. I have a feeling the 6800GS may be one of the last AGP cards released by nVidia. I suppose it's possible, tho; I haven't seen any statements either way.

ah, sorry, missed that in your first post. i agree with 911medic, i doubt it'd come out in AGP, but there's still a chance of it.

Well I went ahead and bought a BFG 6800 GT OC AGP from BestBuy tonight. Went to the only BB in the northeast that still had one! Got it for $302 after coupons and gift card. Now I'm just praying it will be faster in Q4 than my X800XT that I had to put in my girlfriend's computer. Will miss Truform, but HDR and Pixel Shader 3.0 should make up for that, I hope.

Thumbs down Re: Should I buy 6800 GT AGP or wait for 7800 GS AGP?

Just out of curiosity, if they did make a 7800 AGP card, would the speed of AGP still offer a gain over a 6800 AGP or have they hit a limit on AGP bandwith?

The limit was never used up on AGP boards.

IF they make a 7800 GS AGP I'm sure it will be a fast card.
But that's a BIG if. I would just grab a 6800.

AGP 8x is 2GB/s, so pretty much the same bandwidth as PCI-Express with 8 lanes, the only exception is that PCI-Express can do it in both directions, but that isnt a big deal with graphics as most data is always sent up to the card rather then from the card. Most people's SLI setups run on 8 lanes per card, pretty much AGP 8x bandwidth per card. 2GB/s each.
New motherboards from ASUS and the like can do the full 16 lanes (4GB/s) per card now, but the benchmarks show nothing for any real performance gain.

My friends who write NVIDIA's demos at NVIDIA disagree. They claim the G70 (7800) is bandwidth-limited on AGP 8x and that this is the reason NVIDIA has no plans to make a G70 AGP reference design.

FWIW This means the OEM would have to come up with an AGP reference design "out of pocket," and this is not likely to occur.

YMMV.

I thought I read somewhere on this board that the 7800 GS was just a card sent to review partners or something and was never intended to get into public hands.
