Followed the instructions for compiling a kernel module for the 2.6.14-1.1656_FC4smp. No errors are reported by the installer. (I used the download sh'ed the .run etc method)The installer ends with "Installation of ... 8178 is complete"
No errors are reported until I try (in say tty4) to "startx" Then I get the error above Also "modprobe nvidia" also gives the error "FATAL ..." same as shown in the Title of this post above. Thinking this was a path problem, I noticed that my old xorg.conf module path is different from the new one generated by nvidia-config. Where do I find the missing module and how do I tell X where it is so I won't get the "not found error". |

Please attach /var/log/nvidia-installer.log and an nvidia-bug-report.log file generated after a failed attempt to start X.

Thanks but I went back to nvidia 8174 and the 1653 kernel. Everything is apparently normal again. Had to redo the kernel interface, again! Since I have invested about three + hours trying to get 8178 and 1656 working together, and I feel like I'm back in Windows 3.1, I'm going to take a break and see if I can summon up enought courage to try it again later. Hope no one else is having this problem. Certainly is frustrating.

Back with more info.
I removed the lian 2.6.14-1.1656_FC4 Red Hat Fedora Core kernel that I just downloaded, init'd to Run Level 3 and re ran the nvidia NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run installation script, while happily running with 2.6.14-1.1653_FC4 kernel from Fedora Core update. No probems this time. NVIDIA X Server Settings gui reports all OK and using driver 1.0-8178. I re-used my old xorg.conf which has twin view settings in it and which doesn't have a ModulesPath call out. So I conclude nothing is amiss with the nvidia end of this. I'm finding fault with the latest kernel upgrade (the 2.6.14-1.1656_FC4). I'll try creating a 8178 kernel interface for the 1656 kernel later. Larry |
