Default can't compile/install new driver

I've tried to load the new driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2.run but i keep getting an error telling me i have an x server running. i've looked in /tmp with x running .X0-lock is there, I've look after an init 3 .X0-lock is not there. but i still keep getting this error.
any ideaS
