Ok. i'm getting mad trying to install some nvidia driver for my TNT2 card in my PC. i'm using mandriva 2006 linux with a new compiled kernel (2.6.14)...
i know i've to use drivers supporting TNT2, i've tried all of them, but the driver allways fails to build... i also tried with an older kernel 2.6.12 (one of mandrake's distribution) old drivers, like 4349, (i think the ones designed for 2.4 kernels) stop installating saying they don't find modversions.h new drivers, like 6629, (for 2.6, i think) are not able to build the kernel module... trying it by hand with 'make install' using the source i just see a long list of compilation errors. i'll be glad if somebody can help me to solve this problem... i'll like to be able to use the graphic's card also with linux, not only with windows... please, help me! thx |

It seems I'm trying to install the same combination as you:
Mandriva official 2006 with a nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 M64....and it doesn't work. Although at the time you did not receive any answer, did you find the solution? At the time I have downloaded NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run.txt, but is it the adequate download? Thanks |

Almost the same here, Debian Etch (testing) with RIVA TNT2 Model 64/Model 64 Pro (acording to lspci).
Acording to nvidia we have to use the 70 drivers: Quote:
there is: 1.0-7676 1.0-7667 1.0-7664 1.0-7174 1.0-7167 70 ?¿¿?? 1.0-6629 where is 70, and where is 75? what am i missing? |

for TNT2 you have to use 1.0-7174, seee:

So I try NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7174-pkg1.run, but it does not find any kernel to use. This refer to the herebelow included part of the associated README:
since I don't even know what a kernel is and how to check if the kernel sources package is installed. I was just able to check that the '/usr/bin/ld' is on the computer KERNEL INTERFACES The NVIDIA kernel module has a kernel interface layer which must be compiled specifically for the configuration and version of the kernel you are running. NVIDIA distributes the source code to this kernel interface layer, as well as a precompiled version for many of the kernels distributed by some popular distributions. When the installer is run, it will determine if it has a precompiled kernel interface for the kernel you are running. If it does not have one, it will check if there is one on the NVIDIA ftp site (assuming you have an internet connection), and download it. If a precompiled kernel interface is found that matches your kernel, then that will be linked[1] against the binary portion of the NVIDIA kernel module. The result of this operation will be a kernel module appropriate for your kernel. If no matching precompiled kernel interface is found, then the installer will compile the kernel interface for you. However, first it will check that you have the correct kernel headers intalled on your system. If the installer must compile the kernel interface, then you must install the kernel-sources package for your kernel. [1] NOTE: installation requires that you have a linker installed. The linker, usually '/usr/bin/ld', is part of the binutils package; please be sure you have this package installed prior to installing the NVIDIA driver. |

Why not just use Windows so that you don't have to go through this crap to get video drivers working?
