Last time I installed PowerDVD6 it decided to associate itself with .mp3, .wav, .avi, etc. files on my machine and kinda irritated me. So I haven't put it back on there yet.

The thing is the movie should still snap to fit the screen from left-right and keep it's aspect ratio. It shouldn't matter because the movie is still wider than it is taller so there should be no reason for black bars on the sides of it. On the top and bottom yes, but not on the sides. It makes no sense.

Yea you're right, they should still snap to both the left & right edges of the screen while maintaining its aspect ratio but that may only on newer movies. I think the problem you're seeing is from older movies that were never originally intended to be released in a 16:9 format. Speaking of that, I've ran across a few movies that did the same thing but they were all old.

Well Dell sent me my replacement which I have been using for a day or so now. So far so good, no bad pixels that I've noticed. Backlight is about the same, though there is a smidgen of leakage in the extreme upper left corner with this exchange. Overall MUCH improved over the 2005FPW in that regard though. The first unit had two bad pixels, one which showed up green on a black background and another that was some sort of gray spot that showed up on white only. I got a brand new unit in exchange, this was not a referb.

It took some tuning to get the gamma level and brightness correct with this display as well as the first. I found some settings over on arstechnica that a guy obtained using a hardware calibrator. They appear to greatly improve things vs. the washed out look the display has out of the box. First I set the ATI gamma slider to .9. Then I adjusted the brightness on the monitor to 27 points and set RGB to 36/33/32. These settings produce a gamma of 2.0 and the colors no longer look kind of washed out like they did at first.

I play CS:S in 2xAA/8xAF 1920x1200 and my system (see sig) handles it perfectly well. It does not break up or get choppy at all and although I haven't bothered to run a fps counter I can tell from the feel of it that it probably doesn't get under 40-50fps at any time. I haven't tweaked UT2004 to run w/AA or AF yet, but it seems to run perfectly smooth at 1920x1200. I plan on changing some .ini file settings with that game and doing some testing but it still looks excellent in widescreen w/no adjustments. BTW, in both CS:S and UT2004 I adjusted the brightness level down a tad because the ATI driver refuses to apply settings when I make a change in 3D Profile. So a change in-game is necessary. But both games look very nice once you do that. Oh, and no discernable ghosting.

Regarding DVD playback, it's best to set PowerDVD to "Original" instead of "Vivid" in my experience. But they look gorgeous and hell just plain BIG on a screen this size. This monitor is a great stand-in for a TV when it comes to viewing movies IMO. I am still having problems with certain widescreen movies refusing to snap-fit the screen but that is a software issue IMO.

I've used a 2000FP, 2001FP, 2005FPW, and now this 2405FPW. While the 2405 is by far the most expensive... It is also the best of the lot not just in size but in overall image quality. There is no screen door effect, no ghosting, and the backlight is for the most part uniform. Blacks are also improved - they look darker with this display versus the others.

Below are some images.

First, a size comparison. You can see the 2005FPW off to the left and the new 2405FPW on the right.

Desktop. Folding running.

CS:S Office. Screenshots really don't do justice btw. It looks better in person.

UT2004. This picture came out kinda dark. Looks a lot better when seen in person.

I found a stuck pixel. Luckily its near a corner and not noticable unless I look for it.

Several people on HardOCP seem to have found dead pixels that they either missed at first or appeared within a few days of use.

It just goes to show you that dead pixels, though not nearly as bad as they once were, are still fairly common. I most definitely would NOT return a panel unless it had a dead pixel in the center or in a particular spot you couldn't handle. Ones out in the corners - I'd keep it.

I'm kinda torn. I get OCD attacks so I'll obssess over it for a week or two. I can live with, though, since it is out of the way and not noticable in gaming or movies or on websitse with dark backgrounds.

However, if they can send me a replacement and cross-ship it, I wouldn't mind taking advantage of it,

Here's the thing... I seriously doubt you'll find a perfect unit. I know I have bad luck, so keep that in consideration, but I've already exchanged once and the exchange still isn't 100% perfect. I have a tiny bit of backlight bleed in the upper left corner and today at lunch I think I spotted another gray pixel, this time in the extreme lower right corner. Since there aren't any dead ones yet out in the center area I'm OK with it. It's my opinion, but out of 10 of these displays I'm betting only one of them would be perfect in every way.
