Hey ENU... I will have a final decision on the monitor being sold or not by next weekend and I'll try to remember and e-mail you when I do so. I want you to know ahead of time that I will probably be wanting about $600 plus $20 ship. I realize the monitor can be had on sale for as little as $899 at times but it is not always on sale not to mention I take immaculate care of my equipment.

Anyhow zoomplayer does seem to be very highly regarded. That and MPC are pretty much the standard players right now to use w/ffdshow. Great little programs aren't they? MPC has built in support for DIVX so you don't even have to load the DIVX codec if you don't want to. Thing of beauty.

Regarding the Westy:
Well so far I'm pretty happy with mine. Out of the box this device is so bright it practically blinds you when you open up a white window. I turned the backlight down to 33 and experimented with some of the settings people posted on avsforum and it seems much more reasonable now. Looks really good at the 2D desktop and of the games I've tried so far all of them look pretty good. The only exception being X3: Reunion which looks to dark, I can't even hardly see the outline of my ship. I don't understand why when the gamma is at default in the game and no other game on the machine seems to have significant problems there. I don't know, I'll have to keep toying with it I suppose.

Movies look good, at least the 1080i/720p .MPG files I have. You can see the compression artifacts moreso than when I played them on my "small" 2405FPW. But they still blow DVD away quality wise. Finding Nemo in 720p looks excellent.

Hey Rip... your pricing scheme for the 2405FPW is great. Done deal if you decide to let her go. I am currently in the market for a large LCD for gaming and PC use but I am not sure if the Westy is something I want. I also am looking at the Sceptre X37SV-Naga. I have read that there is currently a judder/sync issue with the V2 models but that a firmware update is available that rectifies the problem. I'm wondering if Newegg is shipping the Sceptre from their warehouse or getting drop shipments from Sceptre. I was also looking at the Samsung LN-R328W 32" LCD (I saw it in person and the contrast/color/black levels are top notch) but it is limited to 1366X768 resolution. Decisions... decisions... I really need some help figuring this whole deal out.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with anything that does less than 1920x1080 at this point. Especially not if you plan on gaming with it at all. Gotta have the pixels.

When it comes to choosing this sort of thing avsforums is your friend. lol

And I'll PM you when I make my decision on the Dell next weekend.

It's kinda grown on me actually... Only thing I don't like is that games that don't support proper widescreen irritate me even more than before.

I love the size though. Bigger really is better and even though the pixel density isn't what it was with the 2405FPW it really is hard to see the individual dots unless you get really really close. I'm pretty happy w/my decision to keep it.

Now that I have the backlight down to 0 and it isn't baking my retinas there is almost zero discernable bleed in the corners either. Nearly perfect.

I haven't read through this entire thread, but I was curious to find out just how annoying it is for you folks with widescreen monitors having to deal with games that don't fully support those resolutions. I know there are various hacks to deal with these issues, and some of them are total workarounds.

Also, how annoying would gaming be at standard resolutions on these monitors (1024x768, 1600x1200, etc)?

It irritates the hell out of me mainly because an old game like FarCry works perfectly yet some of these newer ones like BF2 and X3 have issues. Enthusiasts are buying a lot of these 16:9/16:10 screens so they need to get with the program. I shouldn't have to hack anything. And in the two games I mentioned the hacks don't fix the aspect ratio - so all it does is stretch across the screen. In X3 that looks horrible, your planets and gates look like ovals. So I end up playing at 1280x1024 instead and just use AA. It still looks OK but I want my full resolution damnit.

So taking the annoyance factor out, games still look OK at non-native resolutions then? How bad is the interpolation on Dell panels?

It's not bad. In fact it's almost like a free form of AA because it blurs edges a bit. It becomes more of a negative if you have to go further down. For instance 1Kx768 on a 2405FPW might not look so hot considering the difference between the native resolution. So a little interpolation isn't that big of a deal but a lot starts to look to fuzzy.

The 1280x1024 stretch in Aspect mode is quite good. I have used it on occasion when just benching, but I still prefer tweaking to get the native res.

It does surprise that Q4 did not have 1680x1050 native support, though the game seemed ready for 16:9 and 16:10 with the aspect setting in the config. Odd.
