I want to take advantage of that Dell deal on the 2005FPW, I really do. But I don't know if I should spend the $$$.

This monitor has been some of the best money spent on PC hardware. I love it.

I was afraid you'd say that.

lol

Buy it. Soon.

FWIW I haven't had a Dell LCD I didn't like, though none of them have been 100% perfect.

Might check this out.

Also, how annoying would gaming be at standard resolutions on these monitors (1024x768, 1600x1200, etc)?
The interpolation (scaling) is a lot better these days but I still play mine centered so that it doesn't scale or stretch games that don't support widescreen. I also sometimes use the fixed aspect ratio scaling. The scaling really isn't all that bad these days, just a little blurrier/softer. The stretching is annoying sometimes but sometimes looks fine. After playing with all the different modes, I've mostly settled on centered. The black bars don't bother me since my 32" TV isn't a widescreen. So, all the movies I watch have black bars and I've gotten use to it.

Yeah, that's another thing I'm afraid of. I simply don't want to have to go through the hassle of buying and returning monitors because of issues like these. I'm so torn.

I was worried about that as well but the one I got is pretty close to perfect (i.e. I haven't found anything wrong it with it but I'm sure no hardware device is ever perfect). Edit: I'm talking in terms of LCDs not comparing a LCD to a CRT for example. With that, there are always tradeoffs.

While I'm certainly not asking for perfection, it sounds like the issues with these monitors are pretty severe and not ones I've seen when people discuss other brands, or even Dell's own 2001FP.

The only issues I've had are dead pixels (constant issue with every Dell LCD I've owned) and backlight bleed on my A01 revision 2005FPW. I think the backlight problems are fixed now. They damn well better be. That thread I linked to I thought might have some pertinent info.

Good luck getting a perfect display. I never have. Yet anyway. If you aren't ridiculously picky though I think you'll be happy.

And I agree w/OWA about the aspect ratios. I hate stretching unless it maintains the ratio properly.

I guess I've been lucky so far. Out of the 4 LCD monitors I've bought (2 for me, 2 for my parents), none have had any dead pixels. I was worried about that the most with the Dell 24" since I figured with so many pixels, I was bound to have at least one dead one but so far so good.

Oh, I just thought of something I read about the Dell 24". In Maximum PC, they said that some users are complaining that the Dell 24" has a high pitched squeal. Dell is aware of the issue and will fix it. Thankfully, mine is okay b/c that would have drove me crazy. I can't stand any high pitched noises.

2000FP - 2 stuck red pixels
2001FP - 2 stuck red pixels
2005FPW - 1 stuck red, 1 stuck green
2405FPW - 2 stuck blue

Friend also bought a 2001FP. 2 stuck red. Another friend got a replacement 2000FP for his. One stuck red.

As you can see I've got a lot of reasons to be skeptical when I hear people say they've never got a display without a single dead pixel.

That's not a statistical anomaly IMO.

It's worth pointing out that in most cases those pixels only showed up when the right background color was in use. Red came out on white. The green/blue only showed up on black.

Heh, if you count the two I purchased at work, I've purchased a total of 6 LCDs without any bad pixels (knock on wood) but not all were the same brands. 3 were Samsung 19" LCDs, 1 was a Sony 17" LCD, 1 was a Viewsonic 19" LCD and one was the Dell 24" LCD. I hope I didn't just jinx myself.

I think it's just your bad luck rubbing off on them...bad luck by association.

Edit: Maybe you should do a poll. I really don't think it's as bad as you think. I think you're more likely to get one without any bad pixels. If you read a lot of the Newegg (and other sites) user reviews, most people report that they got one with zero bad pixels. Of course, those user reviews aren't very reliable but I think most people would want to report that since it would irritate me if I got one with a stuck/dead or whatever pixel.
