How noticeable is it with normal use (watching TV or playing a game, etc.)? That is, is it only noticeable with a solid background or can you see if when gaming, watching videos, etc.

It actually looks like they took 2 21" panels and linked them together somehow. Either that or the black lighting is comprised of two separate sources. I wonder if this is a common practice with large LCD displays?

As far as this being noticeable during actual usage? Well that all depends. If you are viewing a movie with a solid blue background or solid gray background it shows up. I've seen it happen with a few .mpg files of mine with blue backgrounds (such as movies on coral reefs for instance). In fact that is how I first noticed it.

I can see it in CSS when someone throws a smoke. If I get inside the radius of the grenade where you can't see anything but smoke and it goes all gray - the bars show up pretty bad then.

So yeah it's noticeable. And if I have a desktop (like the Mac light blue aqua background) with blue wallpaper it's there staring me in the face all the time. Which drives me nutty.

Anyway the backlight is composed of multiple vertical strips of around 1" (guessing) wide. If you look real close there are multiple bands on the right side, not just the one in the middle that stands out the most.

I will try an exchange but if the next one isn't a marked improvement then I'm going to try for a total refund. If I can't get that (good luck) then I guess I'll have to settle on the 37W1 instead and just deal with it's problems. While it has defects mine did not have the banding this thing does.

If you do see an increase in gaming preformance because of the decrease in verticle pixels it will be very minor. You will definitely see a benefit in games that support wide screen mode (larger POV) and anamorphic or widescreen video. I honestly believe that if you are going to be on the market for a new PC display a widescreen LCD should definitely be on the top of your list!

Well the second one still has a bit of banding but I think I'll keep it. I can't see the banding except when I put up this background and it's not as bad as the first one.

I'll post some more images later.

I took a few more images this evening. Keep in mind these pictures aren't all that hot and don't really do the PQ justice. The FarCry shots in particular are very washed out but it's the best I could do with this old Olympus C3030. Getting good snapshots is tough and you really need perfect ambient light conditions unless you use a flash.

The good news is that it looks even better in person. Most of those shots are a bit washed out. I should try taking pictures again sometime but during the afternoon when there is some natural ambient light in the room.

So far I'm pretty happy with the display. Only complaints are the little bit of banding this one still has which you can't see unless there is a gray background up. That and the fact it cost me an arm/leg. lol

I can get the 42" Westinghouse for $2200. I'm really thinking about it but it's something I don't need right now so I'll pass. The problem is that I'm one of those compulsive buyers so you never know!!
