Default X.org hang

When starting X and running glxgears (or MythTV) X goes to 99% CPU load and the screen goes blank after a couple of seconds. Dmesg shows different Xid messages. I've tried various suggestions for these types of errors here on the forum without any luck.

This happens with 8178, 7676 and 6629. NVAgp = 0 didn't help. RenderAccel is turned off.

What's the best way to rule out the GFX card being busted?

System:
GF FX 5200
Intel P4 Celeron 2ghz
Asus P4XP Motherboard

Please see nvidia-bug-report.log for further system info.
