Default Dell 2405FPW and 6800GT: Good Gaming Combination?

My monitor is fading fast, and I need to replace it. The Dell 2405FPW looks great and is in the money ballpark.

Question is whether I will have gaming performance issues with my system, since the native resolution on that monitor is 1920x1200. My current system comprises an Abit IC7 M/B, P4 3.0GHz, 2GB RAM, and Leadtek 6800GT.

I am running most games at 1600x1200, although BF2 and HL2 need performance tweaks to keep them acceptable at this resolution. I am mostly playing WoW right now, and it is smooth at 1600x1200 most of the time.

Question is: would there be any notable performance difference between 1920x1200 and 1600x1200 with the 6800GT, or would performance be only slightly slower, if changed at all? I have the feeling that if there was a difference, it would be something I could live with, especially when you count the benefits of having widescreen.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

Well.. I don't really know how you're palying those games at 16x12 with a 6800gt nless all the eye candy is off..

I had trouble running games at 1920x1200 w/ single GTX as soon as I turn on any AA or any AF.. without those and some other settings turned down it might be possible.

For instance - quake4 I run using quak4 7800.cfg, 0xAA, 4x AF 1920x1200 to get acceptable framerate with SLI GTX.. of course you'd have to have even lower settings if you want uninterupted play.

1920x1200 can be pretty tough for a single card but since you're okay with making compromises to run at 16x12, maybe you'll be okay with making a few more to run at 1920x1200. Personally, I would want a faster card but it really depends on what you're willing to live with. I really hate not being able to use max settings or close to max settings. It's a great monitor though. I love it.

I have the exact same combo your talking about, the 6800GT does well, HL2 will run fine at 1920x1200 with no AA and low AF and look great; WoW doesn't run widescreen, its streched so you may want to run proper aspect ratio 1600x1200 with black bars on the side and have a larger picture then a 21" CRT and it will look great also; BF2 can run WS sort of, but I would run it at 1600x1200.

Go to http://www.widescreengamingforum.com/forum/ to read up on WS gaimng.

I'm loving this monitor, even when in aspect ration mode (black bars) its fantastic and the bars are dark black like the bezel (you won't even notice them).

I came from a 21" Sony CRT which is a great monitor and the 2405W is a couple of steps up, I think you'll like it.

WoW DOES run widescreen and my 2405FPW runs it very nicely at 1920x1200. However if you look at my sig, I run SLI. Very nice monitor though and I would highly recommend it!

Sounds like a great monitor that will force me to consider my next video card upgrade, but won't be too hard to handle with my current card for now.

GuOD, WoW stutters occasionally at 1600x1200, but works fine. I never use AA at these higher resolutions for any games. They don't really need it, IMO. The jaggies might be more noticable on a larger monitor, though, so we'll have to see. BF2 definitely gives me the chops at 1600x1200, but I am a casual gamer in BF2. I am used to getting killed all the time anyway. I dumb down things like shadows, etc. which frankly don't add too much of value, and the game works good enough. I can always keep it at 16x12 and just run in the center of the new monitor, I suppose.

OWA, I know... I hate running games at anything less than optimal, but whatcha gonna do? I can't afford to stay up with the hardware curve. Before I get my next video card, I'll have to move to PCI-E everything. Not looking forward to that.

rflair, as I understand it, WoW DOES run in widescreen. Supposed to look excellent. See this thread. Also, thanks for the link to the Widescreen forum. Really good stuff there.
