Default Install help please.

Hi, complete noob here. Can someone please help me get the Nvidia drivers installed for Linux? I am running 2.6.11-auditor-10, which I gather is based on Knoppix.

I downloaded from NVidia's website NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run

I ran it from a command line with sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run

The installer comes up and tells me it cannot find my kernel source files and something about rpm. I looked for my kernel source files, but could not find them on the hard drive.

I also tried to run the nvidia-xconfig, I downloaded it, untar'd it, but what do I do with all those files. I dont know how to run things with Linux yet.

Detailed help greatly appreciated. Im going to the store now to get a Linux for dummies book.

Thanks,
Rich

PS: I basically just want to make my Dell Insprion 8100 show a desktop larger than 1024x768, without having to fn-f7 to take up the whole screen.

you need to install you kernel headers in order to compile the nvidia driver.

you're using a derivate of knoppix, so that line may work for you :
uname -r (you see your kernel version)
apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` (replace uname -r by the result of the command)

if that works (but i'm really not sure of this...) try to install the nvidia drivers !

Thanks for your replay.

Ok I tried that but got this:

Reading Package Lists...Done
Building Dependency Tree ... Done
E: Couldn't find package linux-headers-2.6.11-auditor-10

Now what?

if there is an official site or forum for your distribution, ask them how to get your kernel source or kernel headers.
You need them !

The last solution could be to build you own kernel from sources.

Thanks so far. I did try to contact the official site. But guess what, its down. I think its time to try another version of Linux.

2 things before I do...

What one should I try?

and

Is it difficult to add programs that the Auditor verison had, that a new one might not?

Thanks,
Rich

I have the exact same problem, my kernel is 2.6.11-1.1369_FC4.

@ zander: I tried the "apt-get...." line, but it says it doesn't know the command

Could somebody please help me ?

Thank you very much,
Jerre

Jerre,
apg-get is native to Debian, not FC4. What specifically is the problem that you're having?

Thanks,
Lonni

Specifically,
I have a Dell Ispiron 8100 with a Geforce2go video card. I would like to set my desktop resolution to greater than 1024x768.

I do not know how to install the video driver.

Thanks,
Rich

Will do. Thanks. I think my problem lies in the version of Linux Im attempting to run. I dont think I have the kernel source files or a linker (according to Chapter 2 of the document you linked above.)

I will try with a different kernel and post any questions I might have. Anyone know of a version of Linux that will give me the least problems (ie-installing the video driver or having the source files and or a linker)??

I tried Debian and had alot of issues with freezing during the setup...I think it had to do with my Dell 8100 hardware specs. Hows Knoppix?

Thanks again,
Rich

I would recomment either Open Suse or Fedora Core, those come witha a lot of user-friendly tools. I use Debian now and I find it nice but very technical. to setup the video card I had to recompile the kernel, I will spare you the details but it took me days to intall.

All that you need for FC4 is the kernel-devel RPM, plus the normal assortment of development tool RPMs.

Thanks,
