Default Complete freeze when using OpenGL

My laptop completly freezes when OpenGL is used. X, keyboard and mouse are not responing.

This is a Acer Aspire 1522WLMi with an Nvidia 5700 Go. It seems to be an AGP issue because it only happens when using NVAGP or AGPGART.

Steps to reproduce: run glxgears or any other OpenGL application.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I have a few questions:
0) Does this happen with an older kernel as well (such as 2.6.14.6)?
1) Does this reproduce without RenderAccel turned on?
2) Are you using the latest released BIOS?
3) Are you able to ping/telnet/ssh to the laptop when X is frozen?
4) If you boot with the acpi=off and/or noapic kernel parameters, does that have any impact?

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi Lonni,

0) Yes. At least with 2.6.14, 2.6.14.1 and 2.6.14.2.
1) Yes
2) Yes. Laptop bios 1.11
3) Nope. No ssh, no telnet and no ping reply
4) No change at all with acpi=off and/or noapic.

Thanks,

Paul.

If you temporarily switch back to using the 'nv' X driver, are you able to run glxgears?

Thanks,
Lonni

Yes, using the NV driver OpenGL apps run without problems.

omg .. i'm having the EXACT same problem..

i'm also having an acer aspire 1522 =( pretty crapy thing imho.

so the actual problem seems to be GLX.

what does work:
using the newest "nvidia" driver OR nv as long as one is using the xorg-x11-glx module

i'm using gentoo and can run: eselect opengl set (nvidia/xorg-x11) (choose one) .. when running with nv and setting nvidia there is no glx and glxgears wont run.

btw creepy: you can always use the MagicSysRq keys (as long as they're in your kernel) - simply hit:
alt-print-S (sync your hdds)
alt-print-U (umount them)
alt-print-B (reBoot)
that way you dont have to reset your computer w/o umounting your hdds

i would like to offer any "help", to track that bug down. so let me know if i can do anything, Lonni.

thanks,
nutz

My Asus L5D locked up when using the builtin wlan + nvidia-driver.
With kernel bootoption:
noapic acpi=off pci=routeirq it works.

nutz, do you have a 2nd system available to setup some kind of remote console to capture the crash output? If so, you could setup either a serial console (assuming that this laptop has a serial port, and you have a serial cable), or setup a netdump/crashdump.

Thanks,
Lonni

This laptop has no serial port, only USB. I could setup a netdump/crashdump although I doubt it will do any good since my network is gone when crashed and the logs don't show anything related to the crash. But will try anyway

It's a few special programs + kernel patch.

Maybe it's just me being dense but I can't seem to find a patch for 2.6.15. LCKD seems to support up to 2.6.8 and I can't seem to find the redhat netdump util's (probably since I don't run redhat).

Lonni: Any other suggestions for me how to extract the information you need?

You might want to try using the more generic crashdump tools:
http://lkcd.sourceforge.net

Thanks,
Lonni
