Exclamation Black screen (logs says hsync out of range)

I have been fighting this problem for over a week now and have tried everything. I have a k8t800 with a 3400+ Sempron, a MSI FX500, 1 GB RAM, and WD 120 GB EIDE (which you will see in the log). I have yet to see a display for my desktop (Debian 31, unstable using kernel 2.6.15-686). Before when my screen came up for logon there was no text and the screen was pretty much blank except fo the shape of the login box. After I installed the new IA32 (8178) it doesn't even get that far now, just a black screen. My xorg.0.log says that all my hsync are out of range. I tried manually entering the proper setting is xorg.conf and even using the generic ones, same result. I have attached all log files of importance. PLEASE HELP!!!

Highest Regards,
mgreenly

Is anyone from nvidia in this forum to shed some light on my problem? I still need serious help if anyone know anything about this.

I experienced a similar issue after changing out my motherboard and chip. I was able to work around it by booting into single user mode and disabling [gkx]dm and then reinstalling the NVIDIA driver. After loading the new module and testing with 'startx', I re-enabled the display manager and everything was fine. Hope that helps!

Hi mgreenly,

your Xorg.0.log doesn't say your hsyncs are all out of range. Quite a bit of them are correctly validated (you can see them after the "out of range" part. So you should have enabled modes such as 1024x768@85/75/60 Hz. The problem doesn't appear to be there, at least to my eye. It seems to stop at GLX initialization, or worse at video-card initialization (which is the successive step in the chain).

Maybe you can try to:
1) comment out the GLX module loading line in your xorg.conf, just to see wether the problem lies in it or not.
2) check if is there any debian-based nvidia package left (e.g with the command "dpkg -l |grep ii |grep -i nvidia"), and purge them all
3) have a look to /etc/init.d/ if there is any nvidia-like init script, and possibly remove it, or rename it.

Hope this helps,
best,

d_p

OK, I did all of the above and found out the .X0_lock needed to be deleted (duh me). Anyway, I have my display up and running but am getting so strange stuff. I run KDE and my initial login screen has no text on in and the menus don't hvae anyting in them. I logged in by guessing at he text boxes and got to my desktop. My mouse is a little dot with a box that has vertical lines in it just below the little dot. When I try to access any of my menus, they popup like nromal for a split second before all the text (ie menu option/selections) disappear. This happens to all menus and my icons on my desktop are gone but I can see the square outlines of where they would be. I have already tried changing themes and that has no effect. I am totally lost.

My video card is a MSI nVidia FX 5000 w/ 256mb, VGA and DVI (don't know if this is relevant).

Highest Regards,

Mgreenly

I tried Gnome and most of it seems to work, some menus in it are gone as well but KDE is all messed up
