Default ASUS A8N/VM CSM: how to (text) install Fedora on SATA drive?

Hi,

I have this board with the nforce 430/GeForce 6150 chipset and only one
SATA-II disk, regularly seen from BIOS

1) When I boot from the first CD of Fedora Core 4 x86_64 I get:

initial screen (the one where you can give boot options) displayed
perfectly.
all following screen (do or skip mediacheck, etc...) all messed up. By this
I mean (text) image is very stable, but every 2/3 lines of characters the
columns are shifted, so I see a bunch of disaligned blue or red rectangles.
after two minutes a stable line of white text on black background saying
"anaconda is starting", then black screen. What can it be? Broken ISO? I did
check the checksum before burning. Also, if I boot with FC4 32 bit disc 1
everything on screen is fine. It just doesn't see the SATA drive, which leds
me to the second question

2) How do I install Linux if there is only one SATA drive? I need a driver, nv_sata, right?
how must I use it? Where is it explained in detail how to proceed?

TIA,
Dillo

use FC5...it's got the latest kernel so you should have less pain.
The SATA driver is built into most Linux distros nowadays...

If I really have to I will but:

I have a very slow internet connection right now, so downloading only the
nv_sata driver/module/thingy rather than another whole 5 disc set would
be much faster. Where can I download that driver and related instructions
on how to use it? Just to learn, if nothing else

Above all:
how and why would FC5 solve my problem #1? That is the fact that it
cannot drive the monitor, not even in text mode, see original message:
very stable image, but messed up. If I get (by memory) to the mediacheck
screen, I see a bunch of "OK" text buttons, all around the screen (more exactly,
their upper halves). Why?

TIA,
D.

I just installed FC4 on an Asus A8N-VM motherboard with this same chipset. I ran into the same issue. My installation did give me an option to load additional drivers that I had to select from a list. This is cumbersome at best. The NVIDIA SATA driver was almost at the very end of the list. If you see an NVIDIA ethernet driver, add that one, too, or you won't have a working ethernet port when all is done.

OK, but....:

1) which option were you given? What did you have to enter at the initial prompt? linux dd or what
else?

2) Above all, what about the other problem? The fact that the screen is messed up? Any clue on
why it is so (never heard the bios could be it) or how to fix it with other boot options? For the
record, a Knoppix 4.02 live CD 32 bit I had around boots and runs just fine in graphical mode
and sees the hard disk

if you don't have a distro w/ the 2.6.14 kernel at least, you *will* have pain. I tried a bunch before settling on Kanotix. I'd strongly urge you to just spend the time to grab FC5 unless you want to waste more than the download time fiddling...

Hmm, good point, I guess. However (sorry if I insist but I'd really like to understand what's
going on, regardless of what I'll install at the end): above all, what about the other problem?

Thanks again

As far as I can see from Google, FC5t2 runs kernel 2.6.13. Do you think it's still worth
it?

TIA,
D.

FC5 uses 2.6.14 AFAIK:

FC5-test2 has a 2.6.16-prerelease kernel at the moment.

FC4's latest kernel (as well as quite a few going back many months) has sata_nv support.

Thanks,
Lonni

OK, then (whatever Fedora version I go with) my real problem seems to be the first one:
why am I seeing screwed video even in text mode? Can it be the BIOS, some of its options
or some linux boot option? Right now I am stuck before having the possibility to
load sata_nv

TIA,
Dillo

If you're seeing video corruption even with a text mode installation, that might be a VBIOS issue, or an SBIOS issue. Are you using the latest SBIOS?
