Default X fails to start on recompiled FC4

Hi,

I've recompiled my kernel to use the latest v4l drivers. However, when I tried to re-install 1.0-8178, X fails to start upon reboot. It then redoes the xorg.conf to allow X to run.

Thanks in advance for any help. My nvidia-bug-report.log file had to be broken up because it was larger than 100k.

The bug report that you attached indicates that you're using the 'nv' X driver, and not the nvidia X driver. If this problem reproduces with the nvidia X driver, please provide a bug report that captures the problem.

Thanks,
Lonni

Okay, so I moved xorg.conf.backup to xorg.conf, and then did '/sbin/init 3'. I then logged in and did a 'startx'. Attached is the nvidia-bug-report.log with the "nvidia" driver loaded. I must not have loaded the module correctly, even though the installation finished correctly.

According to your bug report, you don't have the nvidia kernel module installed. Does "modprobe nvidia; lsmod | grep nvidia" return anything? If not, then you need to install the driver again.

Thanks,
Lonni

[mythtv@htpc ~]$ /sbin/modprobe nvidia
FATAL: Module nvidia_1_0_8178 not found.
[mythtv@htpc ~]$ /sbin/lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 4856404 12 [permanent]

This other post also looks similar to what I am seeing: http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=63003

He seemed to think it's a kernel problem, not an nvidia problem.

Whre is nvidia_1_0_8178 coming from? Did you install any 3rd party packages that contained the nvidia driver?

Okay, I think the problem is solved. A google search turned up this thread: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archiv...p/t-52959.html

So I made a backup of /etc/modprobe.conf and changed the lines:
alias char-major-195 nvidia-1_0-8178
alias nvidia nvidia-1_0-8178
to:
alias char-major-195 nvidia

I rebooted, got the nvidia splash, and X came up fine.

Is this going to cause problems down the road?

No, not that I am aware of. Could it have come from using 'yum update' on the regular FC4 kernel? Maybe the mythtv package?
