Your nvidia-settings version is too old, it doesn't have coolbits support. Emerge nvidia-settings-1.0.7167 from ~x86, that should do it.

If you had searched the Gentoo forums you'd know this already.

i tried searching the forums already

anyways

when i do "autodetect" on 3d overclock, X11 locks up, i can still reboot with a ctrl+alt+del though

however, it seems as though I am able to successfully overclock manually now

i've got it close to my windows settings, without pushing it unstable yet

thanks guys,
George

the other thing though is I can get a higher CPU overclock in linux than in windows. I can get prime95 to run without error at a higher overclock i linux than i can in windows.

But, all i care about for now is the card, and yeah it runs my games fine, but you know... i have the overclocking problem, i have to overclock everything including my cell phone

Heh, sorry, no. The temps in my sig are Core/Ambient from windows (that's what I run most of the time). My ambient only goes up a couple of degrees but core will idle around 60 in linux for me. I know others have seen the same thing as well or I'd be worried.

I idle at 51 to 50C in Linux. Make sure you're running "nvidia-settings -l" on X-Startup so you can re-apply your coolbits settings.
