ya, i hear ya. the security part is probably the hardest thing todo, when it comes to running your own highly availible server. boy, its really a hard thing to call when your two choices are server security or server performance..

Glad to see it isn't just me getting these messages. They're coming up frequently, even early in the morning like right now.

It's funny how the "server to busy" messages happen either late at night or early morning (EST for me). That must mean that our UK friends are hammering the forums while we lay in our beds!!

I've only noticed the problems since that x1900xtx review chart was put up... I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Maybe people are hot linking to it all over the web or something.

Actually it seems to be worse again. I didnīt knock on wood, and it seems that I jinxed the server. Sorry Mike!

This reminds me of a forum where I used to hang out. They didn't have a server problem, but a software problem. They had gotten rid of vBulletin and made their own forum software. We had a joke about server monkeys, referring to the techs in charge of the server. It wasn't really that derogatory, because they had coined the "monkey" title themselves.

So what exactly is determining that the load is too high? vBulletin? It's very quick to serve the page that its too busy, obviously Apache isnt having any trouble. You can probably push the server farther then what vBulletin stops it at. If the server slows to a crawl then you have something to worry about. If there are too many connections to MySQL, then raise the limit. But at least disable that stupid vBulletin load detection scheme. If its a *nix server, it should be able to handle a lot more then what vBulletin thinks it should.

I do this stuff for a living, I host several large servers all running Linux.

Furthermore, when serving large sites, its hard to go by the load averages. You really have to know what they mean. Take for instance, some of the biggest site's servers i've seen run at a load of 10+ and higher yet experience no slowdown at all. Its not uncommon to see kernel.org running at loads of 20+ either during heavy times.

I'd say just disable the vBulletin load limit crap. See what the server really can do, rather then what vBulletin decides what it should do... If the server is worth its weight, which from the specs it seems that it should be, then everything will be just fine. The server is responding rather quickly, no doubt that it can do alot more then what that load limit junk is set at.
