upgrade to 2.6.16 displays a blackscreen

Hi,

I've updated my system to linux 2.6.16-rc2 and nvidia 1.0.8178 and now I get a black screen after booting.

dmesg says:
NVRM: loading NVIDIA Linux x86 NVIDIA Kernel Module 1.0-8178 Wed Dec 14 16:22:51 PST 2005
NVRM: PAT index 1 already configured for Write-Combining!
NVRM: Aborting, due to PAT already being configured

I have a GeForce Go 6600 TE/6200 TE, as /var/log/Xorg.0.log says.

I've used gentoo's packages to install the driver (nvidia-kernel-1.0.8178-r3 & nvidia-glx-1.0.8178) and they already include most patches (as can be seen at http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcv.../?hideattic=1).

Can somebody help me, please?

Which kernel were you using when this problem was not present?

I was using linux 2.6.11.10 & nvidia driver 1.0.6629. (I upgraded both at same time)

@nlopes: also, are you using vanilla Linux 2.6.16-rc2 or a kernel derived from this kernel? To the best of my knowledge, vanilla Linux 2.6.16-rc2 does not install a WC entry in the PAT.

yes, I'm using the plain vanilla linux with no patches.

If you use 1.0-8178 with 2.6.11.10 is the problem present?

If you disable the vesafb does that have any impact?

yep. with or without fb, it doesn't work on 2.6.11.10.

It's a Toshiba laptop with a simple BIOS (it only says ACPI BIOS 1.20)

sorry for the spam.. but now with the new BIOS, dmesg doesn't display those 2 lines about PAT when not using framebuffer But still doesn't work, I only get a black screen..
