Default Can't install any NVIDIA drivers on Debian

Hi,

Hope someone can help. I am a 100% total newcomer to linux, im trying to break free of M$ so decided to take the plunge and download debian.

Installation seemed easy enough, I wasnt sure what x server to pick as I was running an nvidia geforce mx440 I decied to pick VGA as all g.cards should conform to this standard, I figured this was the correct one to pick. As you guys will well know resolution and colour depth is rubbish (640x480 and only 16colours).

I tried downloading the latests (and oldest) nvidia graphics drivers but they wont install, it brings up a message saying there was no precompiled kernel found, it then attampts to download one from nvidia but says it cant find one and then attempts to precompile one otself but then it brings up an error stating it cant find the kernal sorce string or kernel header files.

Im at a total loss here, I really dont knopw what to do. Looking around the web there should be some sort of kernal intsallation located at usr/install/linux<kernal version> but there is nothing in usr/install.

Please help.

you need to install the kernel headers, and some tools to build the driver :
apt-get install linux-headers gcc make module-assistant

then try to run :
m-a a-i nvidia

if it work without errors, install nvidia-glx :
apt-get install nvidia-glx

then reconfigure you xserver :
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (xserver-xfree86 if you are using sarge)
and choose "nvidia" as driver.

when you restart X, if it doesn't work, simply log as root, run nvidia-bug-report.sh and dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and select "nv" as driver. the first comand generate a bug report, post it here.

I've tried this and I get a return on the first part of Couldnt find package linux-headers.

What should I do now as my problem is exactley the same as the chap above?

Ok chaps, I finally managed to get the darn thing installed. I restarted the x-server, the NVIdia logo comes up and then it goes straight to a command prompt and disables the xserver and tells me to restart gdm when its configured correctly. Any idea on what I should do now?

Thanks

Even better, please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
