Today I have built a computer using the crossfire version of the xpress200 (RD480) and as a videocard I used a geforce6600gt. I have done some basic tests using driver 1.0-8762 and upto now it works stable even in 3d programs. I will keep you guys updated.

Folks,
I have not been able to use 3D acceleration with my 7300GS either since my A8R-MVP motherboard has the infamous ATIRS480 chipset. So, my question is: What are the NVIDIA based PCI-Express cards that work well with the ATIRS480 chipset while running Fedora Core 5 (or any other linux)?? Comments anyone?? Regards, TL_KJ5XF |

I'm afraid I do not. I would suggest asking the motherboard manufacturer, as they would be best equipped to qualify videocards with their products.
Thanks, Lonni |

Interesting comment, since my 7300GS works fine with the ATI RS480 under Windows XP (with the drivers from Nvidia). The EXACT hardware while running Linux will crash within minutes using the Nvidia provided linux drivers. That leads me to believe that it is not a hardware issue, but an issue with the Nvidia drivers for Linux... Oh well... Hopefully someone else that monitors this forum will share their results. I really would like to find an Nvidia based PCI-Express card that works with the ATI RS480 chipset. Regards, TL_KJ5XF |

as a matter of fact the hardware is working pefectly under windows but not at all under linux or bsd - and it's nvidias buggy driver that causes problems. Stop sending users around and start doing some work yourself... at least test variuos combination of hardware to assist those who still want to buy another nvidia card. All the best, Wolfgang |

Wolfgang,
Thanks for your feedback. Hopefully some other folks will share their experiences with video cards that are known to work under Linux with the ATIRS480/482 chipset.... Regards, TL |

Folks,
I went ahead and purchased a 6600 PCI-Express based card and now I have accelerated video running under Linux. If I ONLY had known about this incompatibility prior to buying my 7300GS card, I would have never purchased it.... So......... USERS BEWARE!!!! IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON RUNNING LINUX WITH A MOTHERBOARD THAT HAS THE ATI RS480/482 CHIPSET AND USING AN NVIDIA BASED VIDEO CARD, THEN YOU BETTER THINK TWICE!!!!!! The only Nvidia based card that seems to work with RS480 chipset is the 6600 based cards. Hopefully someone will read this and save themselves some time and frustration. Regards, TL |

The people who reported issues were using either a 6200TC or a 7300GS. Boththe 6200TC and the 7300GS are equipped with TurboCache support. More advanced Nvidia boards (6200 non-TC, 6600, 6800, 7600, ..) don't support TurboCache it is only used on various lowend boards (I think on 7100/7200 cards aswell). As I mentioned I'm using a rd480 with a 6600gt and don't have issues, the same for someone who moved from a 7300GS to a 6600.
I think the issues only appear for cards using TurboCache. I don't know this for sure but based on my result combined with the results of a user who moved to a 6600, it seems to be related. |
