Default I just bought the 7800GS AGP card! WooHooo!

I'm just excited. Please pardon me. I just wanted to see if any other linux user has grabbed one of these yet. Mine will arrive tommorrow. Bought the XFX Force overclocked rendition for 300 at newegg. I'm replacing a 5900 card and I think it may give a slight boost in speed.

I am waiting for 64-bit applications and games to become available before I upgrade my motherboard to 64-bit FX/Opteron chips. That is the main reason why everyone has AGP. 64-bit/PCI-E has no purpose in gaming yet. Their crap is all still 32 bit.

I'll post a little linux review and fps stats on linux if anyone cares to know. I'm very happy that Nvidia released this flagship card for an AGP slot. Nobody I know has PCI-E on their workstation/home pc. And I work with tech's. There's just no reason for an upgrade on linux when your proc is say a AMD 3200 XP chip with a hardware RAID array and corsair 2-2-2-5 DDR. So the AGP part is very nice. Just wanted to say thanks..

I upgraded to an Athlon 64 3000+ a while back myself, but went AGP as I had a 6800GT when it first came out, so of course I wasn't going to buy a new video card just yet.

No reason to upgrade? Maybe if you only play old games or like low fps.

Well, got the card installed. But the linux driver has no 7800 support. So I get to figure out how to get this thing happy until they do release:

"adds support for GeForce 7800 GS AGP"

for linux. Seems the windows version is out- sorta.

The NVIDIA Linux driver has had GeForce 7800 support since 1.0-7667. If you're having problems, please generate and post a bug report.

Thanks,

OK, here we go. I currently have it configured for the 6800GT. Hmm.. ok, the forum doesn't allow compressed attachments or files over 100K. The bug report file is 155K. Any suggestions?

Btw, nvidia-settings detects it as a 7800 GS, but the driver configuration does not see it is such. Such it looks like a cached driver list on my end. I uninstalled/reinstalled the driver. Same result. Maybe I need to smoke the X configuration.. Hrmm.

The readme says it's listed as 0X0093. I don't see that among the selections. In fact I don't see any 7800 among the selections. Odd.

The nvidia driver doesn't have GPU/card specific X configurations. Whatever you were using with a 6800GT should work just as well on the 7800GS.

I'm guessing that your distributions card list isn't up to date, however that has no impact on the functionality of the driver.

You attached the driver installer log. You'll need to attach an nvidia-bug-report.log. Why do you think that the driver has no support for the 7800GS?

If I can pick any nvidia card configuration and have it perform properly, then that's fine with me. My distro's cards aren't up to date. You are correct. I will probably need to update the distro to have it reflect the new list properly. If choosing the 6800GT is copesthetic, than that will be fine by me. It seems to work without issue atm.
