Default which terminal emulation for Nvidia scripts?

Hi,

When I invoke the NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2.run or NFORCE-Linux-x86_64-1.0-0310-pkg1.runutility I get a messed up ASCII screen: There is no space between the words and the prompts appear anywhere on the screen intermixed with previous messages. Do these utilities require a specific terminal emulation? Which one?

I'm guessing that you're using either Fedora Core 5, or a recent SuSE release? If so, this is a bug in the ncurses package that ships with the OS. You'll likely see the same corruption running 'make menuconfig' to configure a kernel.

Yes, I'm using SuSE 10.0
No, I don't see this behavior when I do "cd /usr/src/linux; make menuconfig"

Is there a bugfix or a workaround? I'm afraid that I misunderstood some choices because of the messed up screen.

You can install the driver with the -s switch as a workaround.

Thanks,

I know I can use the "-s" and "-a" switch and later look at "/var/log/nvidia-installer.log", but the log is quite verbose, so I might overlook the important part as easily as in the messed up screen.

I was more thinking if I can fix the behavior anyhow.

@barmala: you can restore binary compatibility by rebuilding ncurses with --with-chtype=long; alternatively, you can rebuild `nvidia-installer` from source - this won't work on Fedora Core 5, though (due to broken header files).

What does --with-chtype=long do? The configure file says "--with-chtype=TYPE override type of chtype", and the ANNOUNCE file says "--with-chtype
overriding of the non-LP64 model's use of chtype", which is almost as useful as the comment "foo: this is foo".

The spec file in SuSE's RPM does not contain this option. Maybe they ommited it for a reason. Are there any undesirable side effects?

Alternatively: How do I revuild nvidia-installer from source?
