Default very high temps suddenly with 6800GT

Hi everyone,

I'm not seeing any artifacts in games, but since a week I suddenly experience very high temps with my 6800 GT.. wich surprised me.

It idles at 54 degrease, but when recording the temps with rivatuner while load, it peaks at 98 degrease :\ (this was while playing F.e.a.r.)
Normally it would idle at 54 degrease, but peak at 78 degrease or something at highest while playing games.

My ambient temperature idles at 37 degrease right now, and when my temps go into the 90's, my ambient temperature is around 53-55 degrease.. is that a problem?

I just opened my case to see if the temp would still be that high, and now it had gotten into 90 degrease already when playing fear..

I think this is a little bit too hot..since it's obvious that air-flow it's not the problem - the temps get that high while the case is opened also. It's very cold in my room atm, so the temps in my room can't be causing any problems.
Cpu and mobo temps are fine.. (recorded with asus probe).

I wonder what could be causing it.
Is it possible that there might be some dust that has been gathered under my videocard-fan or something?

Thanks in advance.

My system:

p4p800
2.8 ghz 800 fsb
XFX 6800 GT everything@stock , using 81.98 drivers. -- (is it a known driver issue?)
2x512 pc-3200 twinmos dual-channel.
Antec true-power 480 W.

Yes, unscrew the little plastic painted cover on the heatsink, blow the dust off, screw it back on and check the temps

I have seen dust build a wall blocking the air before

i think fear is just that hard on a vid card. My 7800gt would hit about 65 load with any other game, but when i play fear, it hits about 74. It also could be dust build up on the heatsink fan.

I already blew out the dust on the fan, but maybe I should screw the fan and everything off ..and blow the dust off then: what hemmy said.

But about the ambient temperature: is 55 degrease at load acceptable?

Ok..done alot.

I got off literally everything of my card..cleaned the dust ( it wasn't THAT much)..and had A LOT of trouble getting everything back lol..I thought I was screwed. But eventually I managed to get it all back together..and now I played fear for 10 minutes ..and the temps only went up to 77 degrease..not higher. this was with the case opened..but my temps used to go to 90 degrease with the case open as well.

I'm gonna double-check with the case closed and report back here ;]

Checked: with my case closed, my max temp is 80 degrease, and max ambient temperature is 50 degrease.

These video cards run extremely hot... that isnt really that high at all.

BTW, that dashed line in your sig is really long, it messes up the page layout at 1024x768. Might want to fix that

EDIT: Heh, just realized we were talking ambient temp. 55 is pretty high for ambient, but if its really hot where you are, then that might be the best you can do.

see, i'm not the only one
check out my pic
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...ighlight=dirty

Thats about 1.5 years of use.. With about monthly or so blasts to clear out the inside case area clear.. but that was the first time I pulled off the top plate..

thats about a 15 C difference right there. Although biggest indication was how fast temps drop when you take off the load.. cause of airflow diff.

I "blow out" my case about once a week or so and I noticed my card was running higher than normal. At first I thought it was newer drivers or something. One day it hit me to take the card out and unscrew the aluminum Nalu plate on top to expose the fan area...and wouldn't you know it, massive dust build up. So I blow that out with my canned air, put it back together, put the card back in the slot, and my temps are back down to normal. I was up about 12' on memory and core with the dust in there. What a difference. So, just blowing the card, even with that little straw thing on the can, doesn't always work, sometimes you gotta go deeper. (no snide comments)

Wow @ that pic..that's EXACTLY how mine looked..the dust was on the exact same spot..

Dust is gone now and my temps have gone to 'normal' again..but only in F.e.a.r. they reach 84 degrease with my case closed. In other games like day of defeat source, the max is 78 degrease, and command and conquer generals is max 65 degrease.

I'm gonna buy a zalman 700cu just in case tough.

Are you running a BFG card per chance? If so, they claim that up to 120C is perfectly normal operating tempertures, even if your machine is hardlocking, artifacting, etc. All part of the "joys" of owning one of their products.
