Default random freeze 7800GT with x86-64 1.0-8178

Hello,

since 8 days I own a nvidia GF 7800GT card from MSI: NX7800GT-VT2D256E

Before I used 1 month the onboard nvidia 6100 GPU of my ASRock 939NF4G-SATA2.
The combination GF6100 and 1.0-8178_x86-64 works fine for me.

My problem is a not reproduceable, random freeze of my linux box with the GF 7800 from MSI. Sometimes I can play 3 hours and sometimes the system freezes after 5 minutes.

I think it's a driver issue because the x11-org vesa and nv driver does not freeze the system. I can eliminate heat problems. I checked the temperature with a script every 5 seconds. The last temperature after a freeze was 38C for the GPU.
The freezes happen in OpenGL games and in X. For testing I disabled all fancy
features like compsite, render acceleration and coolbits, anyway the system
freezes randomly. Tested installations Gentoo amd64, Debian amd64, Debian i386 (32Bit driver). The 32 Bit driver freezes the Debian too.
Attached is the nvidia-bug-report output for the gentoo amd64 system.

Is there any option for the nvidia module to enable debug messages?

greets
MaWo

I have a few questions:
0) Does this reproduce with a kernel.org kernel as well?
1) Have you applied this patch?
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=62021
2) If you boot with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters does that have any impact on the problem?
3) What kind of motherboard & BIOS are you using?

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi Lonni

Thanks for your answer!

0) I'm just testing with kernel 2.6.15-4
1) I didnt apply this patches because I thought they were included into 1.0-8178.
I saw the thread date but not the date in the thread-title.
Right now I'm testing the patchset with vanilla 2.6.15-4. The system did not freeze for 4 hours which is a new record
3) As yet, I did not test the apic kernel paramter.
4) motherboard: ASRock 939NF4G-SATA2 with AMI BIOS.

Thanks,
MaWo

I can not tell you yet. I'm at work and I have (>had< ) only remote access.

from AsRock product side http://www.asrock.com/product/product_939NF4G-SATA2.htm

BIOS Feature - 4Mb AMI BIOS
- AMI Legal BIOS
- Supports "Plug and Play"
- ACPI 1.1 Compliance Wake Up Events
- SMBIOS 2.3.1 Support

I will append the version number if I'm at home.

Please be patient,

I'd suggest updating your BIOS to the latest, as 1.00 is the first rev:

There is no need to update the BIOS.
I use an X2 4400+ -> ADA4400DAA6CD. This CPU is supported.
The other BIOS modifications are onboard VGA or opteron related.
The onboard GPU 6100 is stable.

Tonight I will test noapic and acpi=off kernel parameter. If this does not work I will send back the card to the seller.

Thanks for your attention

A BIOS update contains alot more than what is documented on the page. Many undocumented bugs are fixed. There's nothing to suggest that the videocard is faulty.

Thanks,
Lonni

ok, I updated the BIOS. It's now version P1.40.

[For all who dont have windows, no DOS and no floppy drive but have to flash a BIOS which is only shipped for windows and DOS use freedos from freedos.org. That worked fine for me.]

Last night I tested noapic and acpi=off. The computer didnt freeze for 8 hours but it wasnt really usefull anymore. Amongst others the glxgears FPS decreased from 13.000 to 1.500.

I hope the BIOS update solves the problem. There are only 2 days left to send the card back to the seller otherwise I have a not useable 300 graphic card

Thumbs up Re: random freeze 7800GT with x86-64 1.0-8178 (solved)

Now glxgears runs for 10 hours.
In the end it was the BIOS.

Thanks very much for your help Lonni
