I occasionally lose my X session because the X server crashes with a signal 11 error. Unfortunately, the X logs don't give any other information most of the time, though occasionally they'll list a memory corruption error.
It is often triggered by a new window opening, or being remapped, but that's not always true. This is with nVidia 7676 drivers, 2.6.14 linux kernel, and an FX5700 card. I've had much the same issue with other drivers and kernel versions. It seems to be a long standing nvidia driver bug. Also, much of the time when the server crashes, the console is blank, not going back into text mode. Sometimes hitting ALT-Fx keys will restore it, but sometimes not. Are we ever going to see a fully stable release from nVidia? Also nice would be a guide showing which driver releases work best with the different chipsets. For example, I have an FX5700... is there much point in using an 8xxx driver on one of those? I've submitted a bug report for this twice, but never got anywhere with it. I have so far never had a problem under Windows 2000 (with this card anyway), so I figure it must be an issue with the Linux drivers. For the record: I have tested the system in text mode for memory and CPU errors, including memtest86, as well as looping kernel compiles. |

Does this problem reproduce with 1.0-8178?
Did you test the system for memory & CPU errors while X was running? Is there any way to reliably reproduce this problem? Please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log Thanks, Lonni |
